"Get Your Butts to Broadway" is a Pork Butt Roast Competition and Festival on East Broadway Avenue in downtown Hopewell, VA, on Saturday, June 25, 2016. Taste the area's best roasted pork butts and vote to choose the "Best Butt of 2016". There will be a people's choice and judges' choice awards. The winners will receive a trophy, cash prize, and bragging rights for the year. This event will also include live music, beer, other food vendors, and more!   The fun begins at 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Juneteenth (I can't even pronounce it!), what is it?  It is the day in June when the Petersburg National Battlefield commemorates the announcement of abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865.  Music, lectures, artillery demonstrations, children's activities, and exhibitions are among the features activities at the annual Juneteenth at the City Point Unit of the Petersburg National Battlefield on June 18, 2016 This is a FREE event beginning at 12:00 pm at Grants Headquarters, City Point, 1001 Pecan Ave, Hopewell, VA. Lee and Grant Under Fire , Again ? On June 18, 2016, Pamplin Historical Park will continue its Summer Tour Series with a caravan tour visiting the command sites of the last days of the Petersburg Campaign and will examine the different ways that commanding generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee focused their energies, while under enemy fire during the events of the Breakthrough of April 2, 1865. The program will be led by Park Ranger and Historian, Edward Alexander. Community Events 

Hopewell and Historic Churches - Yes, we have those too! C hurches within the city of Hopewell have played a major role in the development of cultural life.  In celebrating Hopewell's 100th Anniversary and its religious heritage, Saint John's Episcopal Church, located at 505 Cedar Lane, Hopewell, VA, will have a special spiritual celebration on June 5, 2016, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Everyone throughout the city of Hopewell and the surrounding communities is invited to come and celebrate Hopewell's many religious expressions. A One-Day Outing, oh what fun! Hopewell Recreation and Parks has scheduled an outing to Smithfield Station in Historic Smithfield .  Lunch is planned for Smithfield Station (you must pay your own) followed by a Main Street walk and shop. The artwork shops are fantastic, as well a variety of other quaint shops of unique items. Transportation is provided by Recreation and Parks for a $5.00 fee. You must register by June 21, 2016. In conjunction with the "National Campaign of Remembrance" to Remember Our Fallen Heroes, the Fort Lee 6th Annual Run for the Fallen will take place on June 11, 2016.  This run is a special tribute to our fallen military members. You are invited to run or walk the 1-mile or 5-mile course. Photographs of fallen soldiers will be placed along the route. If you have a photograph of a fallen military member and would like to display it along the route, send an e-mail to [email protected] or drop off at the Army Community Services.
