Summer is a busy time at the Chamber, as we plunge head first into SummerFest preparations, while maintaining all the day to day business that makes us such a valuable asset to our members.  This month's issue has a lot of worthwhile content, and I hope you will take the time to read through it as you get a chance. As always, feel free to send me feedback, as well as what's going on in your business or organization. We love to share your information and success stories!

IP28, the gross sales tax, proposed for the November 2016 statewide ballot, would impose a huge new $5 billion tax on sales, that would increase costs for Oregon businesses, working families and consumers.  Some quick facts about IP28 worth sharing:
  • IP 28 would tax sales, not profits. Even businesses that are losing money would be forced to pay this huge new tax.
  • All of the new taxes would go to the general fund, with no plan for addressing the real needs of Oregon schools, small businesses and families.
  • IP 28 would apply to sales of everyday consumer items like food, gas, medicine, cable TV, even electricity.
The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce generally follows the recommendations of the OSCC in matters of business politics. In May, our board voted to join the OSCC in opposing IP28. If you haven't already, join the coalition to defeat the tax in Oregon.

Community Field Trips Increase Awareness

The Rural Tourism Studio, presented by Travel Oregon earlier this Spring, seeks to connect and unite communities up and down the North Santiam River region and capitalize on the natural resources available to make our region a tourism destination. But, WHAT IS available to visitors here?

One of the action groups from those workshops is working to improve our regional referral network. As a result, they have been offering local "Field Trips" to showcase what our communities have to offer. The first trip to Detroit & Idhana, and the second trip to Mill City, Lyons, Gates, & the Little North Fork both had roughly 20 participants each! Be sure to check out the pictures on our Facebook page!

INTERESTED? Join us for an adventure through Scio, Aumsville, Stayton & Sublimity, Tuesday, June 7th: 9AM - Noon, with lunch to follow at Moxieberry. Please RSVP with  Allison  (503) 871-5188.
Tourism Spending in Oregon Surges
Article shared courtesy of Travel Oregon

The Oregon Tourism Commission, dba Travel Oregon, confirms that 2015 was the travel industry's sixth consecutive year of accelerated growth and economic impact, reaching new heights in revenues for the state. Independent findings by Dean Runyan Associates indicate that travel-related spending increased by nearly $500 million last year to achieve a record $10.8 billion in revenues.

"The travel and tourism industry continues to drive economic development in the state of Oregon and is helping to build strong and sustainable local economies," said Todd Davidson, CEO of Travel Oregon. "Travel-related spending, employment and earnings are increasing across the state, spurring job growth in our cities as well as our suburban and rural communities."
