Sunshine State News: Gun Control Advocates Wear Orange to Stop Gun Violence
Gun control advocates are wearing orange on Thursday to participate in National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the movement has made its way to Florida.
The Wear Orange Campaign was inspired by the friends of a 15-year-old Chicago high school student killed by gunfire in 2013 after performing in Barack Obama's inauguration celebration.

Tampa Bay Times: Hillsborough County, city of St. Petersburg tell Tallahassee to end black bear hunt
They may not have any power to change it, but Hillsborough County commissioners took a symbolic and united stance Thursday against the state's black bear hunt..
On the other side of the bay, the St. Petersburg City Council on Thursday also passed a resolution 8-0 opposing the bear hunt. The sponsor of the measure, Council member Karl Nurse, noted the high number of mother bears killed last year that likely lead to the death of many cubs and the next generation of bears.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg takes grant applications for redevelopment area
Tuesday marked an opening day of sorts for the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area, which covers neighborhoods in Midtown and Childs Park.
The city began taking applications for grants drawing from the area's tax increment financing revenue, estimated to be about $470,000.

Tampa Bay Times: Panel weighs public artwork for St. Petersburg pier project
Although the demolished inverted pyramid was itself a work of art for some, the new pier will have something the old one did not - actual public art.
A committee appointed by the city's public art commission held its first meeting last week to determine how to spend what could be a minimum of $500,000 on artwork for the Pier District that's scheduled to open in the fall of 2018.

Petersburg, Florida, two brave firms-to work on a project from which West 8, BIG, and Michael Maltzan were roundly rejected.
For almost a century, the City of St. Petersburg's pier, in various
incarnations, has attracted residents and tourists to Tampa Bay. Once a fishing pier, amenities were added over time: An inverted pyramid-cum-restaurant from the 1970s, reviled at first, later became a local icon. By the late 2000s, however, the pier was deemed structurally unsound and the city moved to demolish and replace the structure via a national competition.
