A Message from Andrea
As the school year draws to a close, we find ourselves in the midst of the frenzy of the final days, the reflective practice of the last year, and looking forward to what is to come. Each year as the days come to an end we gather together for the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees. During this meeting we have the opportunity to thank all the board members for their service to the school, to thank those who are coming off the board, and to welcome new trustees into our community. It is a time for both the professional and lay leadership to share the Strategic vision for Schechter with the community.

Please join us Thursday, June 9th at 7:00 pm at Schechter for our Annual Meeting.

Shabbat Shalom,
Andrea

Schechter's Own "Matheletes" Score Big
During the school year, students in grades three, four, and five participated in Math Club, led by Schechter parent Alex Medvedovski. Today during ReLiSH, students were awarded certificates for their participation and placement in math tournaments held throughout the country. Elliot Shani (5th grade) scored in the top 2% across the whole country.  Matthew Medvedovski (5th grade) scored in the top 10% and
Alex Patt (3rd grade) scored in the top 20% across the whole country and in the top 1% at his age category. Congratulations also to   Harris and Spencer Berson (5th grade) and Miriam Newman (4th grade) for receiving certificates for their participation as well.

Rosenberg Orthodontics Celebrates Reading Challenge with Pizza Party
Congratulations to the third, fourth and fifth grade readers. Earlier this year, students were challenged by former Schechter parents, Dr. Barry and Carol Rosenberg (Rosenberg Orthodontics,) to read a set number of books. Every year for over a decade, the Rosenbergs have partnered with Schechter's third, fourth and fifth grade students to celebrate the joy of reading. This challenge culminates in a pizza party sponsored by the Rosenbergs.  Although the goal for each class was 200 books, each grade far exceeded that number.

Thank you to the Rosenberg family and the Schechter students for keeping this tradition going.

3rd and 4th Graders "Sense" Colors through Poetry
Recently, students in third and fourth grades learned about poetic language including: alliteration, imagery, metaphor and simile, personification, and onomatopoeia. They wrote either a sensory color poem or a comparison poem using similes and metaphors. The following
are some excerpts from their poems:
Troy Raviv wrote, Blue sounds like the ocean waves splashing on the beach. Lily Temkin wrote, Friends are like sprouts that help me when I need it. According to Pauline GolderMidnight  blue feels like sparkling stars in a night sky, It tastes like juicy, ripe, huge blueberries.  Cooper Govoni-Raich wrote, Yellow is stretchy, sizzling and hot.  Shoham Grupper  wrote, Green feels calm and quiet and Green tastes like fresh mint.  Eli Rotter wrote, Blue feels like a warm hug when I wear my grandpa's sweater.

It's Rocket Science in EC 4
This week, students in Early Childhood 4 had the opportunity to be rocket scientists. After witnessing the emerging interest in things that fly, the teachers brought in two different types of straw rockets. The students had a chance to try both the fat one and the skinny one. They learned that while the fat one looked cooler, the skinny one flew better. They also learned that depending on how they held the straw and how strong they blew into it changed how far and how high the rocket flew. One student exclaimed, "This is awesome!" while another said, "I love Science!" "Science activities like this encourage the students to think about a problem and help each other find solutions," said teacher Yeshiva Cohen.

5th Graders Continue Torah Reading
Over the past two weeks, six more fifth graders read Torah for the first time: Summer Neiditz, Molly Lerner, Ethan Leshem, Matthew Medvedovski, Elliot Shani and Carly Dulitsky. Like the readers who preceded them, and those to follow, the students applied the trope system that they had learned during the year to their own individual readings. The students read beautifully!

An extra bonus of the day: earlier in the spring, the students interviewed Bella Medvedovski, mother of Matthew Medvedovski, about her family's emigration from the former Soviet Union. During the interview, Bella told them of the drama that unfolded as she and her family prepared to leave the country.  Apparently, there was a problem with her papers. While her mother and the rest of the family traveled onward, Bella and her father remained behind, finally reuniting with them after three weeks. The students expressed their concern for Bella and relief that her father was there to care for her.  On Thursday, when Matthew Medvedovski read from the Torah, the students had the opportunity to welcome his grandfather, Bella's "famous" father to our Schechter family.

2nd Grade Shacharit Service
On Wednesday, second grade students and their families shared a special morning with a Shacharit service, the morning prayers.
The students led the service by introducing each tefilah (prayer) from Ma Tovu to Adon Olam and  demonstrated their impressive knowledge of the prayers.  The goal of the Shacharit service was to celebrate tefilah as a school community and as families.  One of the most beautiful moments in the service was when the students introduced Yozer Or through an originally created piece of art.

"As a teacher, I felt proud of my students' ability and confidence to express themselves through tefilah," said teacher Ziva Kovner

Heard in the 3rd Grade
After learning the story of the Binding of Yitzchak, the students were asked where they see themselves in the story.  Raviv Harel-Sibelman commented, "I see myself in the angel.  I'm a very kind person.  If I saw someone doing something to someone, I'd say "Stop!  Stop doing that!"
