St. Stephen's, WVC Becomes a Family Promise Site

From:  The Rev. Mary Janda, Vicar
St. Stephens, West Valley City

In a new partnership with Family Promise Salt Lake, St. Stephen's, West Valley City,  is preparing to welcome homeless guest families. On Sunday, June 5th at 1:00 p.m., The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi will conduct a blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch St. Stephen's new hospitality suite. T he new space will offer private and common rooms, showers, and laundry facilities.  Meals will also be provided.

The Family Promise model is an interfaith, non-proselytizing, alliance that provides a more humane, cost-effective, community-based approach to combat homelessness.  Utah's 2015 Comprehensive Report on Homelessness states that 14,516 individuals were homeless and 42% of this number are individuals in families.  St. Stephen's partnership with San Esteban Episcopal Church, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Granger Community church and the Hepisipa Wesleyan Church demonstrates a successful model for how faith communities can work together to ameliorate  pressing social needs in their communities.

 Diocesan Council Notes

The Diocesan Council, one of the four governing bodies of the diocese, consists of six elected lay and three elected clergy members.  Additionally, Bishop Hayashi, Canon Chancellor Stephen Hutchinson,The Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler, and Diocesan Treasurer, Ms. Sandra Garrard, function as ex officio members, giving them a seat and voice but no vote.  Chancellor Hutchinson explains that the Council "develops, adopts and monitors the diocese's annual budget, advises the Bishop on financial issues and oversees diocesan programs".

The Council approved and oversaw the installation of security cameras throughout the ECCU campus this spring.  Cameras were installed in the ECCU building, at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, and at various outside locations on the property.

In other news, The Rev. Trace Browning, Rector at All Saints, was elected to the position of Vice President of the Diocesan Council's Executive Committee.  Mr. Ron Kastner and Mr. Russ Pack were elected to serve as lay members of the Executive Committee and will work closely with Bishop Hayashi and the Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler on a variety of diocesan projects in the coming year.  Monica Daly will continue to serve as the Secretary to the Executive Committee.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)

The Rev. Deanna Sue Adams, deacon at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 589 South 200 East, Brigham City, UT, and diocesan Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) coordinator, reports that the Diocese of Utah, contributed $6,850 to ERD in the first quarter of 2016.
The Rev. Deanna Sue Adams awaits her plane connection from an ERD meeting in Chicago

Deacon Adams reminds everyone that if an individual sends in money to national headquarters and identifies his/her congregation, the congregation's name will be noted as the giver.  If no congregation is noted, the amount is just included in the total for our diocese.  If desired, donations can be designated for a specific purp ose.

Since there is usually a matching amount given by an anonymous donor around year's end, many congregations send in their contributions during the last quarter.  This year, our diocesan convention offering will be included in the second quarter.

Remember to mark your calendar's for the ever popular Chicken Dinner ERD Fund Raiser held at St. Michael's every year on the first Saturday of November.  This year it is scheduled for November 5th.

Bishops Group Urges Episcopalians to Wear Orange

Today, June 2nd, Bishops United Against Gun Violence  urge everyone to wear orange as a sign of their commitment to reduce gun violence in their communities.  The advocacy group, consisting of 60 Episcopal bishops, supports background checks on all gun purchases and other violence prevention measures.
Utah diocesan staff wear orange to support gun violence prevention.

"Poll after poll demonstrates that some 85 percent of Americans, including the large majority of gun owners and members of the National Rifle Association, favor background checks on all gun purchases, yet Congress won't act," said the Rev. Mark Beckwith of the Diocese of Newark, NJ.  "We need to take every opportunity to illustrate just how widespread the support for this simple legislation really is".

Utah Ministry Formation Program (UMFP)

ECCU blossems
Episcopal Church Center of Utah, home of UMFP.
The Diocese of Utah established the Utah Ministry Formation Program (UMFP) in 2007. The program provides local training to people from Utah and other Intermountain West dioceses who are preparing for ordination to the diaconate and priesthood in the Episcopal Church.  UMFP is designed for those choosing not to attend residential seminary, although some may wish to continue their work at a residential seminary.  The program is also open to lay persons who desire to strengthen their ministries or to use UMFP to assist them in discerning their ministry path.  Lay persons seeking to be licensed by the Bishop for specialized ministries such as preacher, eucharistic minister, catechist, etc., may also benefit                                                          from participating in the program.

The program operates on a two year cycle beginning each August, one weekend a month for ten months each year.  Classes meet at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah (ECCU) in downtown Salt Lake City.
