Trocky Named Associate Dean for the Baccalaureate Program
Assistant Professor Nina Trocky, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNE, has been named the associate dean for the baccalaureate program. Trocky had been serving as the interim since October 2015. In her new role, Trocky is tasked with staying abreast of and advising on a wide array of academic issues and policies impacting the baccalaureate program. Read more.
Ogbolu Inducted as National Academies of Practice Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow
Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD '11, MS '05, BSN '04, CRNP-Neonatal, assistant professor, and director, Office of Global Health at UMSON, was recently inducted as a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice. Distinguished practitioners and scholars represent 14 different health professions and are elected by their peers. Read more.
Governor's Wellmobile Provides Services to SAFE Center for Human Trafficking Survivors
In a joint venture, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) are teaming up to combat human trafficking in Maryland. UMSON, through its Governor's Wellmobile Program, will join in UMB's efforts, as the two campuses have combined resources to open the University of Maryland Support, Advocacy, Freedom and Empowerment (SAFE) Center for Human Trafficking Survivors, located near the UMCP campus. Read more.

Evidence proves that nurses design and lead initiatives that improve health outcomes. Maryland needs nurses who will lead changes to enhance health outcomes for its citizens. The Nurse Leadership Institute offers Maryland nurses a fantastic program in leadership skill development. Applications are due Monday, June 20. Welcome New Faculty & Staff
Stacey Conrad, MBA, has rejoined UMSON in the new role of director of development and major gifts. Stacey previously served as the senior associate director of development at UMSON. She holds a MBA from University of Maryland University College and a BA from Salisbury University.

Renee Franquiz, DNP '16, MS '90, BSN '86, RN, has been appointed to the position of assistant professor in the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, effective Monday, June 13. She joins us from Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Nursing where she served as assistant professor. Dr. Franquiz earned both her DNP and MS from UMSON.

Christine King, MS, has been appointed director of student services in the Office of Student and Academic Services. She most recently served as the academic program manager in the Department of Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Christine is currently a candidate for a Doctorate in Education at Johns Hopkins University and holds a Master of Science in Education from the School Guidance and Counseling program at Hunter College.

Regina Phillips, PhD, MS '79, RN, has been appointed assistant professor in the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, effective Monday, June 13. Dr. Phillips most recently served as assistant professor in the College of Health Professions at Towson University, teaching graduate courses in their nursing education program. Dr. Phillips earned her PhD in public community health from University of Maryland, College Park and earned her master's degree from UMSON. 

Hants Williams, BSN, RN, joined UMSON as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Pain and Transitional Symptom Science effective Monday, June 13. He will receive his PhD in nursing from Duke University in June 2016, and he earned a BSN from San Francisco State University and a BS in behavioral science from San Jose State University. Hants will contribute to the research and scholarship efforts of UMSON.
85 Students Inducted into Pi Chapter
On Monday, April 25 at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) and on Thursday, April 28 in Baltimore, Pi Chapter inducted 85 students into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The purpose of Pi Chapter, which was officially established at UMSON in 1959, is to honor those who have achieved high academic success and to support scholarship and research at all levels in the School.

Nursing Students Selected for M Scholars Program
Harleen Singh and Zachary Lupuloff, who will be attending the School of Nursing at Baltimore and Shady Grove respectively this fall, have been selected to the M Scholars Program. The M Scholars Program is a mentor, educational experience designed to inform and enrich students' knowledge, above and beyond a set course of study. It creates a unique experience for students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) to expand awareness, enlighten choices, and round out professional goals by tapping into the complementary curriculum strengths of UMB and UMCP. The students will work full time on research projects for 10 weeks this summer with School of Nursing faculty members. Harleen will work with Lily Fountain, MS, RN, CNM, assistant professor, and Zachary will work with Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, associate professor.
Shady Grove Students Participate at Gaithersburg Book Festival
For a second year, the Universities at Shady Grove hosted a multicultural storytelling time at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 21. Nursing students

Marie Tchienang (French), and
Tam Melese (Amharic) read stories to children in languages related to their culture. The book festival included author presentations, book signings, children's activities, and other events related to literacy.

Four Students Receive AANA Scholarships
Four UMSON nurse anesthesia students were recently awarded scholarships from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA): Audrey Sonin, Christa Swanke, Promise Olomo , and Alexander Halstead . Combined, these students received $12,000, meaning students at UMSON received more AANA scholarship money than any other school in the country.
BSN Student Earns Scholarship to National Conference
UMSON student and Conway Scholar  Shelia Pierre-Louis earned a scholarship to the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. The conference, which will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park June 2-4, has a 30-year history and is being sponsored by UMB and the UMBrella Group. Approximately 1,000 students from around the country attend each year and leave with a new sense of confidence and skills to support their communities . Read more.

PhD Student Places Third in 3MT® Competition
Megan Doede, a UMSON PhD student and teaching assistant, placed third in the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) first 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, held Thursday, May 5. The competition included eight students from Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and UMB.

Annie Clavon, PhD, MS '83, BSN '79, was named a 2016 Nurse.com GEM Award finalist in the Excellence in Education and Mentorship category. Dr. Clavon is a full-time nursing instructor at Keiser University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Anastasia Valentino, BSN '13, was chosen as Nurse of the Year 2016 from 4 East at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.

Sally Raphel, MS '84, BSN '80, who taught at UMSON from 2000-2006, is the recipient of the 2016 International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses Living Legends Award. This award was presented at the awards ceremony on Saturday, April 16, during the 18th annual ISPN conference in Minneapolis.  Learn more.

Staff Nurses Needed for Summer Day Camp
Horizon Day Camp, Maryland's only full summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, is hiring staff nurses. Staff nurses will provide medical care to campers and staff, work with the medical director to follow safety protocols, and maintain a visible presence in the camp. The camp is located at Maryvale Preparatory School in Lutherville, Md. Learn more.

Student Success Center Offers Assistance to Students and Alumni
UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources. There is also an annual career fair to help job seekers. School of Nursing Seeking Adjunct Professors and Preceptors
UMSON is seeking adjunct faculty members and preceptors. The School hires adjunct faculty members to provide clinical instruction to entry-level students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Clinical Nurse Leader master's option. UMSON is also seeking skilled, experienced preceptors to work with students as they complete their clinical requirements. Learn more.
Docents Needed for Living History Museum
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Chosen by the University of Maryland Medical Center's (UMMC) nursing staff, this honor is given to a faculty member who exemplifies excellence as a mentor and educator. She was honored at UMMC's Nurses Week awards ceremony on May 12.

Kathryn T. Von Rueden, MS, RN, ACNS-BC, FCCM , gave the following presentation: 

Courageous Self-Care: Beating Burnout and Reclaiming Compassion, American Association of Critical Care Nurses Annual Conference, National Teaching Institute, New Orleans, LA, May 16.

Von Rueden was also the keynote speaker for the Barnes-Jewish Hospital annual Trends in Trauma conference, St. Louis, MO, May 12. Her presentation was titled, "Reclaiming Our (com)Passion."
