The
Buffalo Institute for Genomics & Data Analytics (BIG), part of the University at Buffalo, has named Brian McIlroy, a life sciences veteran, as the first executive director.
McIlroy, who has over a decade of experience with GE, will bring his leadership, vision and experience to move the institute forward. BIG, a $100 million genomic medicine initiative partners the University at Buffalo with the New York Genome Center to transform New York State into a national center for genomic medicine. BIG is expanding the university's critical genomic research, compute capacity, and healthcare data analytics to enable state-of-the-art academic and industrial genomic-based research. The end result will be medical advances that also drive economic development.
McIlroy will lead the BIG team in engaging industry and other partners on projects that translate genomic research advances into tools for prevention, treating and disease diagnosis.

UB's Office of Research and Economic Development is committed to making it easier for business to engage and access UB's extensive research and development expertise by offering two new business friendly programs to help your business easily tap into UB's technical expertise while reducing the risk and cost associated with licensing intellectual property (IP) and sponsored research.
UB SWIFT is a streamlined approach to sponsored industry contracts designed to reduce transaction time by addressing inventions and licensing in advance. It established business friendly terms up front, granting companies an exclusive worldwide license to the resulting IP. Companies control all patent filings associated with the technology developed during the research project.
- Grants exclusive worldwide rights to the technology resulting from a research project
- One-time upfront fee
- For exclusive license: royalties of 1 percent apply only if cumulative net sales exceed $20 million ($50M if human trials involved)
The UB Small Business Innovation Award
provides matching funds to companies subcontracting at least 30% of a Phase 1 SBIR or STTR award to a UB principal investigator. The matching funds are an incentive for more small bus
iness partnerships and expand the research funds available to the UB PI for the project.
