Letter from Pastor Melissa
Rooting Families

Dear Beloved Community:

Rooting Families to Grow in Christ is our focus for ministry. All that we do at Santa Clarita UMC is about rooting families to grow in Christ. First, when we talk about families, we mean all people. A family can be a family of one, a traditional family or a single parent family or an empty nester family. When we say family, we mean the family of God.  Second, on June 5th, we have our fun family event, Summer Fun Fest planned.  In the 9am worship, we welcome a traveling youth choir from Hutchinson, Kansas called Trinity Power and Light Company. They are in Southern California sharing their music, dance and message while doing mission work. You won't want to miss this special worship service!  In the Second Service we welcome our District Superintendent, Rev. Jim Powell, to lead music.  After worship we will kick off summer with our Summer Fun Fest: Games, Good Times and Grub.  All types of good old carnival games and fun await such as a dunk tank where you can sink your favorite church member, face painting, cake walk or rock wall for climbing.  On the lawn you can play Giant Jenga or Corn Hole.  We will have plenty of hot dogs for all.  So come and bring a friend!!
On June 12th will be thanking Linda Miller for her commitment and dedication to our Small World Preschool. Our preschool roots the small children of this community to grow. On that day in our 9am worship, we will be welcoming Rev. Preston Price with a reception to follow.
Our Annual Conference will be held from June 15th through June 18th.  Along with our delegates to Annual Conference, Candy Holsenbeck-Smith, Charlie Gray, alternates Joy Metzger and Wanda McNeal representing the North District, I will be attending to the business of our Annual Conference. In light of decisions made at General Conference and Annual Conference, our new sermon series for July will be 'what makes us United Methodists'.  This will be a time of learning and questioning.

Blessings,
Pastor Melissa

June Sermon Series

This year's series will focus on the triple play of persons making the game possible. The Coach, the Player and the Team have distinct roles and action in play, yet each needs the other to win. No matter if you are a coach, a player or a team member (or just like to sit in the stands), America's game has something to teach us about life and faith.

Sunday, June 12 "The Coach"
Sunday, June 19 "The Player"

Summer Fun Fest!

by Scott Mocha

Summer Fun Fest is fast approaching on Sunday June 5, and wow are we going to have a great time! Summer Fun Fest is about Summer, it is about Fun, but it is also about community, about sharing the joy of Christ, and about what it means to live life together.  It's more than just a new name for our all-church picnic, it is a time of joy, a time of celebration, a time to dunk our Pastor, and it is a time to bring together the entire Santa Clarita Community, as all are invited!  We went from an all-church picnic, to an all-valley Carnival!

Please invite everyone you know to Summer Fun Fest, even invite some people you don't know.   And if you have some friends who haven't been to church in a while, invite them to this event.  It will be relaxed, casual, fun, and a great way to get their feet back in the door.  And maybe you are reading this, and you haven't been to church in a while yourself.  This is the time to come back and see what we've been up to.  It's a time to come and reconnect with old friends, new friends, and what makes this church such a special place to be.

Of course we could use volunteers, and we need a bunch of them, but it is also important just to have you there to just have fun, because YOU are one of the greatest parts of this church.   Let's celebrate together...  We cannot wait to see you there.  See you Sunday at NOON!

Be a Host for International Students
The 5th Annual English Immersion Summer Camp for Chinese students from GaoXin No.1 High School in Xi'an, China, will take place at Saugus High School from July 9-27.  Member Patty Stephenson is the China Exchange Coordinator for Saugus High School, and is also the Director for the summer camp.  They are looking for host families for 5 students from one of the top high schools in China.  All students speak English, and will be at school from Monday through Friday during their time in Santa Clarita.  Former host families say that the benefits of being a host family far outweigh the responsibilities of participating!  Host families are to provide a bed for the Chinese student, though he or she may share a room with another member of the same sex.  Host families provide breakfast and dinner during the week, and all meals on the weekends. If a host brother or sister would like to go to either Disneyland or Universal Studios with the group, the Santa Clarita International Exchange Inc. will pay the ticket price for him or her.  If you would like more information please contact Patty at 661-714-6615, or email her at [email protected].

Part 3: 50 Ways to Welcome New People
Follow-up with your visitors.

32.  Get the names and addresses of first-time visitors.  Some churches use visitor's cards, but asking ALL worshippers to record attendance makes it more likely visitors will sign.  Visitors don't want to be singled out.

33.  Make a special effort to remember visitors' names and call them by name.

34.  Make at least one follow-up contact with first-time visitors within 24 to 36 hours of their visit - a letter from the pastor, a phone call, a hand-written note, an email message.  Many churches deliver a gift, such as freshly baked cookies or a church coffee mug, to visitor's homes.  The purpose is to communicate friendliness, not get a membership commitment.

35.  Develop a system or database for keeping track of visitors, their contact information, and the frequency of visits.  A mailing list of persons who have visited in the past is one of your best marketing tools.

36.  Don't overlook visitors who come to the church for the first time for an event other than worship.

37.  Once someone has attended three times, they should be invited to join the church with a pastoral visit and/or an invitation to take part in an inquirers or new member class.

38.  Encourage visitors to get connected with activities and groups, even if they are not ready to join.
