History Highlight: Cenotaphs at Mount Auburn Cemetery
A monument commemorating someone whose remains are located elsewhere is called a Cenotaph.
Oftentimes cenotaphs commemorate people who died in battle or as a young child or who might have passed away before the founding of Mount Auburn Cemetery.
Sometimes an inscription is forthright and explains that the person being commemorated is not buried at Mount Auburn, as is the case for W.H. Carey's monument, pictured to the left. Whereas in other instances, there is no indication that the person is not actually...

Person of the Month:
Frances Sargent Osgood (1811-1850)
Poet Frances Sargent Osgood was b
orn in Boston on June 18, 1811 and by 15 years of age,
was contributing written work to Lydia Maria Child's Juvenile Miscellany.
While still in her twenties, Frances published
several volumes of verse and began an intense correspondence with fellow poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Sadly, Osgood died of tuberculosis in 1850 at the age of 38. She is buried
in Lot #280 Orange Path here at Mount Auburn.
Frances Sargent Osgood, Maria White Lowell, and Julia Ward Howe are just a few of the female poets buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
