JUNE 2016
Beach after a storm
Hurricane Season-
June 1, 2016 to Nov. 30, 2016
Director's Corner
The long and hot days of summer are now upon us. Things will slow down a bit here at the museum. Our winter volunteers have returned home, our Community Museum Meetings are on hiatus until fall, and our foot traffic pattern changes from snowbirds to shorter term visitors looking to enjoy our community for a few days before returning to the normal grind. If you are downtown I invite you stop in, get out of the heat, and enjoy the museum.

Behind the scenes though work continues. Plans are being made for the upcoming year of meetings. We have some speakers lined up I am sure you will enjoy. Our Night at the Museum committee will be active, helping to exceed last year's success. The 250th anniversary of the Turnbull Settlement will be here during the summer of 2018 and a celebration to honor this is being planned. We have a committee now researching ideas and proposals for this event. Grant ideas are being explored that will help create new exhibits and also help with upgrades to our facility. Through the generous donations of several members we have reached our goal toward installing a new projection and sound system. This system will give a large boost to our presentations. Do you want to get involved with all the excitement? Drop me a line and let's talk.

Before I sign off for the month I want to welcome our new Board of Directors. There are several new faces on the Board this term and I know each of them will make a positive impact on our organization. Welcome!
See you at the Museum,
Robert Redd,
Executive Director

Pancakes in the Park 2016 Recap

Pancakes in the Park 2016 was a tremendous success. The weather could not have been better with clear skies but not too hot a temperature.

Our volunteer team, led by Richard Sturge, deserves all the credit for the success. Planning starts weeks in advance and includes making sure the park and tables are reserved. Volunteers are lined up for various jobs including gathering all the equipment and making sure it works, to purchasing needed supplies, to mixing pancake batter, pouring juice, cooking, selling tickets, cleaning up, taking down tables, returning equipment, and more. It's more than a day's work, we promise.

When all was said and done more than 600 breakfasts had been served. Families were seen enjoying their time together throughout the park. Whether they were dancing to the Beu Sisters or playing Frisbee, compliments of Lane-Lennon Insurance, it was a great family morning.

We would like to give a final thank you to our sponsors; Lane-Lennon Insurance, Hottie Coffee who provided more than 500 cups of coffee, Shark Bite Marketing for helping provide maple syrup, and Scragg Groves for assisting with providing more than 15 gallons of fresh squeezed orange juice. We couldn't have done it without all of you.

But most, we want to thank the residents of New Smyrna Beach for supporting this annual fundraiser. All funds raised go to the support the museum and we know many of you look forward to this event each spring. We promise to continue bringing it to you!

FUNDRAISER
  FUNDRAISER

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this fundraiser. We have reached GOAL!

The Florida Anthropological Society hosted its 68th annual meeting in Jupiter on May 20-22. Papers regarding many sites and areas in Florida were given on May 21. Three papers related to New Smyrna and the Smyrnea Settlement were presented. Dr. Roger Grange's interesting and well-received paper at this meeting compared two separate areas of town that contained dwelling structures on this 18th century settlement. One was located adjacent to the town center, in the area of the Old Stone Wharf, and the other was the first structural housing complex identified north of town. His paper discussed the similarity and differences of architecture and artifacts at both sites.

Dr. Arlene Fradkin, Florida Atlantic University, gave a very interesting and well received paper discussing the dietary differences and/or similarities of the occupants of the two separate dwellings discussed by Dr. Grange.  She is analyzing faunal materials from both sites and is currently compiling data from all areas of both sites for a formal report to the New Smyrna Museum of History and the Archaeology Lab.  This data will be submitted to the Master Site Files in Tallahassee's Bureau of Archaeological Research and will be available for future researchers.

Sarah Bennett's well-researched and interesting paper discussed the success of New Smyrna Beach's Certified Local Government's (CLG) goals concerning prehistoric and historic preservation. The City's Historic Preservation Ordinance and the Archaeological Ordinance serve as vital components to protecting and documenting our past under this State designation.

The booklet documenting the most up-to-date data concerning archaeology and history of the British 18th century Smyrnea Settlement is ready to be submitted to the printer. Distribution to the public of this free educational hand-out should begin within the next month or so.
