He knows all the answers,
but still will ask "why"?

but do not be annoyed.

 It is an honor to serve the Baraboo community as the Principal of Jack Young Middle School. I have worked in the Baraboo School District since 1993 and I am proud to call Baraboo home.
It is both my personal and professional goal to provide each and every student in the Baraboo School District with a safe and challenging academic environment. Our most precious resource is our children and we must continuously work to provide them with the highest quality education possible.
Jack Young Middle School is committed to providing every student with opportunities to learn at a level of challenge uniquely appropriate for them. We offer a wide variety of learning opportunities, led by highly qualified teachers.
I am married to Lynn Gunnell, who is currently the Choir Director at Baraboo High School. We have three children in the Baraboo School District, including two current middle school students.
I love Jack Young Middle School and my goal is to create a middle school that kids love too.

| SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM |
This summer the Baraboo School District will again take part in the federally funded Summer Food Service Program. There will be 3 sites we will be serving in plus we will be delivering meals to the Boys and Girls Club. the meals are free to all children 18 years and younger. Any adults accompanying the children that choose to eat will be charges $2.00 for breakfast and $3.00 for lunch. You do not have to be attending Summer School to take part in this program.
The program will run from June 6, 2016 to July 15, 2016 (except the ABE site, which will end on July 1, 2016), Monday thru Friday. All sites will be closed on July 4, 2016.
Here are the sites and the hours:
GLW: Open only to Kid Stop Program kids, serving breakfast and lunch.
BHS: Breakfast daily from 7:00-8:30 AM/ Lunch daily from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM
ABE: Breakfast daily from 7:30 AM-8:30 AM/Lunch daily from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM

MUSIC WEEK AT JYMS!
|
Music Week, a special artistic and educational endeavor, will take place from May 16 - May 20. Professional singer-songwriters come into Language Arts classes to help teach song writing. The musicians work with all seventh grade students and staff for the week and perform a concert for us at the end of the week.. This Year we will have Baraboo's Derek Ramnarace (Old Souls Society) and Gary Frisch (The Hoot Owls); from Nashville comes Canyon Spells and Gabe Burdulis; from Minneapolis comes Kari Arnett; From Madison comes Julia McConahay and her band SheShe; and from the Dells, Marc LaMere.
There will be a concert at the Al Ringling Mansion on Friday, May 20 for the community headlined by Canyon Spells and Old Soul Society along with other musicians and some JYMS students who will perform their original songs.

Congratulations NDS State Finalists!

Eight students from Jack Young Middle School in Baraboo took part in the State-level National History Day event op April 23rd in Madison.
Students who participated in the State Competition on Saturday and their project titles are listed below:
- Kyra Hand Achali C, Ellis Island: Encountering Prejudice during Immigration
- Arianna M and Paige S Liberation of Auschwitz: Encountering the Atrocities of Oppression and Genocide
- Teanna K Susan B. Anthony: Exploring The Rights Of Women
- Jacob Cand Aliyah W, The Donner Party: Encountering the Western Frontier
- Lara J, Amelia E: Exploration, Aviation, and the Fight for Women's Rights
Three of those students were selected to move on to the final round in their category - Jacob C and Aliyah W in the Junior Group Performance category and Lara Justus in the Junior Individual Website category.
Lara was then chosen as a National finalist and will go on to represent Wisconsin at the national competition in College Park, MD in June!!
Congratulations to all of the state competitors, and GOOD LUCK LARA AT THE NATIONAL COMPETITION IN JUNE!!!

The end of this school year is right around the corner. Student chromebooks will be turned in at the end of the school year; more detailed information will be coming out soon. The items that will need to be turned in are: chromebook, chromebook case, charger and straps.
�� If your student has lost their Chromebook Charger, we have provided you two options for replacement:

The end of the school year is quickly approaching. For kids on summer vacation, the promise of days spent swimming at the pool, riding bikes, and playing video games is exciting. Something to make sure your child adds to their summer routine is regular reading time each day. The importance of reading twenty minutes per day does not diminish during vacation. As a matter of fact, without the guarantee of this time during the school day, it is even more important that it happen during vacation so that the dreaded "summer slide" can be prevented. There are many resources to help your child stay motivated to read this summer.
Each year I publish a suggested summer reading list that you can find at readersweb.pbworks.com.
Check out the Baraboo Public Library's summer reading programs at www.baraboopubliclibrary.org. They have planned a great summer of reading activities! There are lots of resources available online, too.
Scholastic has free book lists and access to book experts at www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2016.
And of course there are the many Little Free Libraries scattered throughout our community that you and your child can access, including the JYMS Little Free Library. Have a safe, happy and book-filled summer!

Our ultimate goal at JYMS is to ensure that our students succeed in all facets of life. Your involvement is a key piece to helping us accomplish this goal. Upcoming Activity

May 27th, 2016
8th Grade students will participate in Native American Culture Day. Representatives from the Ho-Chunk Nation will come to Jack Young Middle School to teach students about various topics related to Native American Culture in Wisconsin. Topics will include the Ho-Chunk language, construction of a traditional structure called a Ciiporke, and demonstrations of the Native American sport of LaCrosse. Students will travel among several stations throughout the day and hopefully come away with a better understanding of Wisconsin's native tribes. If you are interested in helping out or attending, please contact your child's Social Studies teacher:

A gentle reminder to middle school parents:

If you really love me, then please...
Don't spoil me
. I know that I should not have all that I ask for; I am only testing you.
Don't be afraid to be firm with me
. I prefer it. It makes me feel more secure.
Don't let me form bad habits
. I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages.
Don't make me feel smaller than I am
. It only makes me behave stupidly "big".
Don't correct me in front of people if you can help it.
I'll be much more receptive if you talk quietly with me in private.
Don't always protect me from consequences.
Sometimes I need to learn the hard way.
Don't nag
. If you do, I will protect myself by ignoring you.
Don't make rash promises.
Remember that I feel let down when promises are
broken.
Don't forget that I cannot always explain myself as well and I would like.
My answers can't always satisfy you.
Don't be inconsistent.
That completely confuses me and makes me lose faith in you.
Don't put me off when I ask questions.
If you do, you will find that I stop asking and seek information elsewhere.
Don't tell me my fears are silly.
They are terribly real to me, and you can
reassure me if you try to understand.
Don't suggest that you are perfect or infallible.
Its too great a shock when I
discover you are neither.
Don't forget I love exploring.
I couldn't learn without it, so please put up with it.
Don't forget how quickly I am growing up.
It must be very difficult for you to
remember that, but please try.
Don't forget that I can't thrive without lots of understanding and love, but I don't
need to tell you that, do I?
