Each year, one week in December is designated as Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) to raise awareness about the impact of computing, the richness of computing careers, and the critical need for computer science (CS) education. CSEdWeek is a call to action to inspire students and colleagues about CS education, to employ better strategies for engagement, and to connect with the broader community about the need for and value of CS education.

We are highlighting programs in Colorado, the Mid-Atlantic region, and Oregon providing computer science education programs for girls in their communities. Connect to programs in your community through your local Collaborative and the National Girls Collaborative Project Program Directory.

Colorado Program Spotlight

CU Science Discovery After-School Classes and Summer Camps

Boulder, CO

CU Science Discovery, a K-12 STEM education outreach organization at the University of Colorado, Boulder, offers a variety of technology classes afterschool and summers for K-12 students to learn more about computer science. Their 2014 Hour of Code programs include Girls Code! on Wednesday, December 10 for girls ages 8 - 10 and Video Game Design on Thursday, December 11 for all youth ages 10 and up.

Mid-Atlantic Program Spotlight

Tech-Girls

Charlottesville, VA

Tech-Girls empowers girls to imagine and achieve their future dreams in our tech-savvy world through resources, workshops, and events. They will be doing an Hour of Code program at Girls' Geek Days, a program all about sparking elementary school-aged girl's interest in technology and computing. Learn more about the December 13th Girls' Geek Day, as well as other upcoming Tech-Girls events, like the Hour of Code event Tech-Girls will be co-hosting with Computers4Kids.

Oregon Program Spotlight

Woodburn After School Club

Woodburn, OR

Throughout CSEdWeek students in the Woodburn After School Club will engage in online tutorials from Code.org, and have the chance to participate in unplugged, hands-on activities that introduce computing concepts. There will be over 400 students participating throughout the district: Tuesday, December 9, 3:45 PM at Valor MS; Wednesday December 10, 3:00 PM at Heritage and 3:15 PM at Nellie Muir; Thursday December 11, 3:15 PM at Washington and 4:15 PM at French Prairie MS; and Friday, December 12, 3:00 PM at Lincoln.
