Counselor John Hicks recently earned his Doctor of Education Degree.  Pictured hooding Dr. Hicks are his wife & daughter, Nikki & Nia, and  Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Tara Carter.
 
Louise Ogburn spearheaded SVCC's semi-annual Silent Auction for Relay for Life, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society.

Martha Reed Serves as Commencement Speaker
Martha Reed has a passion for teaching.  This passion was evident in her speech to the Class of 2016 of Southside Virginia Community College at the May 14th Commencement, held at the Christanna Campus in Alberta.
 
Reed, Assistant Professor of Biology, has been a member of the SVCC faculty for 23 years.  She teaches Anatomy and Physiology, General Biology, Basic Human Biology, Foundations of Biology and has taught Dual Enrollment and Governor's School classes.

Cook Addresses GED Graduates
Jacob Cook, a recent SVCC graduate, addressed a group of GED graduates at Southside Virginia Community College's ceremony sponsored by the Adult Basic Education Program.  A resident of Clarksville who was home-schooled, he is the third generation of his family to earn a GED. 
 
After receiving his GED, Jacob continued to excel at SVCC, having just received his Associate of Arts and Science degree. He has also been nominated for the Academic All-USA Team and named to the All-Virginia Academic Team.
 
He reminded the graduates "we must keep up with the changes of the world by being lifelong learners.  Keep up with the world's vast changes and remember the future is yours." 
Student  Receives Award
The 2016 recipient of the Florence Daniel Riepe Kalbacker Leadership and Community Service Award is SVCC student Benjamin Garland Harmon, a Randolph-Henry High School graduate.

Florence Daniel Riepe Kalbacker has been a long time and loyal friend to SVCC. She has served on the College Local Board, the Foundation Board and  has been involved in many community clubs and organizations. As this year's recipient, Benjamin has embodied the ideals and human spirit for advancing the community as exemplified by Mrs. Kalbacker.

Students Represent SVCC at Retreat
Southside Virginia Community College sent nine students to North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University the week of May 15-18, in connection with Hampton University's Minority Men's Health Initiative Spring 2016 Research Retreat.

First SVCC Power Line Worker Program Celebrates Graduation
The inaugural class of the Power Line Worker Program of Southside Virginia Community College celebrated graduation with family, friends and supporters on May 12, 2016.  Eleven students completed the 11-week program earning Level 1 certification from NCCER (National Center for Construction Education & Research), a commercial driver's license, first aid & CPR certification and OSHA 10 safety training.
