"Nature: The unseen intelligence which loved us into being.
-Elbert Hubbard

Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams is an ongoing series of nearly 50 paintings and drawings. Over 25 works will be on exhibit at the Chur Gallery.

This series was created as an expression of CJ's love for Nature, the importance of humankind's relationship to Nature, and the relevance of nature to our well-being, and the health of the earth.

In his work, CJ strives to unify art and life, incorporating art into our everyday living environments. With his current work, he hopes the art will bring individuals to a new sense of awe and respect for nature and our place in it.

Whether by studies of individual flower species, landscape paintings, images of houses acting in harmony with nature, or attempts at expressing a mystic understanding of the natural world, Nature is paramount in this body of work.

"Elbert Hubbard's and the Roycrofter's embrace of the Rural Idlyllic is a large part of what made me take interest in the Roycroft, and helped to drive my decision to apply for Roycroft Artisan status.  As a Roycroft Renaissance Master Artisan, I am honored to have my first solo exhibition on the historic Roycroft Campus."

"Man is a phase of nature, and only as he is
related to nature does he matter,
does he have any account whatever above the dust."
- Frank Lloyd Wright

From Dystopia to Utopia

Sunday, June 12th
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

"From Dystopia to Utopia: The Artistic Visions of CJ Hurley" tells the story of CJ's primary artistic influences - from Buddhism and his love affair with the art and culture of Japan, to the influences he shared with lifelong friend and writer, S Alexander Smith, who narrates the film.

Viewers will also gain an understanding of CJ's earlier involvement with the "Lowbrow" and "Cartoon Surrealism" art movements of the 1980's and 90's, and how this subject matter transitioned to his work today - driven by the values of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

Location:  Parkdale Elementary School
141 Girard Ave
Free and open to the public
The film is 25 minutes long and there will be time for Q & A with CJ afterwards.

Special thanks to the Roycroft Film Society for including our screening in their June meeting schedule. Check the film society website if you are interested in seeing their monthly film before our screening.

If you would like to view the exhibit before the film, please note that the gallery closes at 5pm on Sunday.  You can walk or drive from the gallery to the school for the screening.
