NewSong, the award-winning contemporary Christian music group with founding member and Tifton native Eddie Carswell, will give a free concert on April 18 in Tifton sponsored by the local Road Less Traveled organization.

The Good Friday event will be at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, with doors opening 

at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. event.

NewSong has released 18 albums and numerous singles, including the hit, "The Christmas Shoes," written by Carswell.

NewSong was founded in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in 

Valdosta and has had eight GMA Dove Award nominations. They are the founders and hosts of the Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, the United State's

largest Christian music tour begun in 1995.

 

"Being involved with Winter Jam is just God's design for us,and it's among the reasons we can still be around," Carswell says. "I think being around all these folks year after year helps us. It keeps us wanting to continue doing something relevant and purposeful, and, most importantly, to keep serving God through the mission He gave us."

 

Road Less Traveled is a non-profit organization, based in Tifton, with the goal of exposing people to Christ, promoting human development creating unity in our community. 

KIDS TO SCRAMBLE FOR EGGS Easter Eggs
 
The 17th annual Scramble for Eggs event is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at E.B. Hamilton Complex in Tifton, sponsored by the Tift County Recreation Department.

Kids may scramble for approximately 20,000 plastic eggs filled with candy or a prize. The age divisions are toddler to three, four to six and ages seven to nine. There will also be an area for children with disabilities, as well as 
games, food and fun.

ALL THAT JAZZ AT ABAC
Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Roger Pemberton and high school jazz bands from across the state perform at the 36th annual ABAC Jazz Festival on April 17 as a part of George Scott Day, an annual celebration of the arts, on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
 

Sponsored by the ABAC School of Liberal Arts, George Scott Day is a tribute to Scott, an associate professor of English at ABAC who died in 1994. The ABAC Jazz Festival promotes jazz and jazz education in South Georgia. Activities begin at 10 a.m. at The Meadows with free performances from 12 high school jazz bands.

 

Coffee County High School kicks off the day at 10 a.m., followed by Tift County, 10:25 a.m.; Worth County, 10:50 a.m.; Colquitt County, 11:15 a.m.; Ware County, 11:40 a.m.; Valdosta, 12:05 p.m.; Lee County, 12:30 p.m.; Thomas County Central, 12:55 p.m.; Crisp County, 1:20 p.m.; Lanier County, 1:45 p.m.; Henry County, 2:10 p.m;, Riverside High, 2:35 p.m.; and the ABAC Jazz Choir, 3 p.m.  

 

A Jazz Clinic will be held at 4 p.m. in Howard Auditorium following the performances.

 

An ABAC art exhibit will also be on display at The Meadows and in the Bowen Hall Gallery from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. featuring artwork from ABAC students. 

 

Pemberton will perform with the ABAC Jazz Ensemble in Howard Auditorium on the ABAC campus at 7 p.m. The concert is already a sellout.



 LENTEN LUNCH SERIES ENDS WEDNESDAY

The Tifton Community Lenten Lunch Series ends this Wednesday, April 16, at the Leroy Rogers

 Senior Center, noon-1 p.m., with the Rev. Stephen Webb of First United Methodist Church.

 

The purpose of the annual community event is to bring Christians together from different denominations and traditions to worship and bear witness to a common faith in Jesus Christ in the Easter season.


5th Annual Charity Bike Ride on Saturday

 

The 5th Annual Tour de Tifton Ilse Boyette Memorial Charity Bike Ride is set for Saturday, April 12Rides are available for beginners to experienced riders.

Proceeds will benefit Tiftarea YMCA programs and scholarships for underprivileged youth.

 

Registration opens 7 a.m. race day with the mass start at 8 a.m. The ride begins and ends at the Tiftarea YMCA Hunt Park campus at 1823 Westover Road in Tifton. The routes pass through Tift and surrounding counties.

 

There will be a beginner's 11-mile course, intermediate level 24- and 45-mile loops, and 62- and 100-mile century routes for advanced riders (you must finish within seven hours). Helmets are required.

KIWANIS TO BARBECUE CHICKEN 

The Kiwanis Club of Tifton is holding its annual Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tifton First United Methodist Church.  

 

The annual fundraiser is in memory of the late Steve Hobbs. The event  helps to raise funds for the club's community youth charities. Plates are $8 for a grilled chicken half with a dry rub, baked beans, cole slaw, bread and a dessert.

 

The Best Friends Humane Society is holding its annual Bark in the Park 5K Run and Festival on April 19 in Sylvester.
