SUMMER FUN

Head injuries are a leading cause of serious injury and death to children riding bicycles. Most injuries occur when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object or collides with another cyclist/pedestrian.

Remember: It's the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA-approved and worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating or cycling.

Here are some tips to keep your family safe cycling this summer:

If you want to share Alberta's unique and diverse heritage with your kids - minus the crowds, party atmosphere, and expense of the Stampede - we have some great suggestions for daytrips which will help you and your family learn about the fascinating history of the city and province we call home.

Though Calgary's had a fairly mild winter this year, it's finally time to spend some quality time outside. While flying kites and going to parks may be all the rage for a few hours, gardening is a great opportunity to let your children grow over the entire summer. Plus, gardening is a great outdoor activity, and it's something that you can plan and enjoy doing as a family.

I learned to love gardening at the knees of my mother who spent her time off from teaching tending a large part of our back yard that had been converted to a vegetable bed. It was a magical place where there was mud, mayhem and homegrown snacks as far as the eye could see. When I had children, I knew that I would want to pass that love affair along.

ROCKING A RAINY DAY - 8 EASY IDEAS WHEN IT'S MUDDY OUT THERE

Written by Michele Ranard, M.Ed.; Photo: PhotoXpress.com

It's hard to beat splashing in mud puddles, but there are plenty of simple, unplugged pleasures to enjoy with children when the weather is dreary.

In fact, see the precipitation as an opportunity to rediscover old-school pleasures. Whether you decide to make it a lazy  PJ day with popcorn and a movie, a productive one organizing the playroom or any of the following, don't forget to squeeze in a little happy dance in the rain.

Everyone's Talking

CTV News reported this month that five models of the popular sippy cup brand, Tommee Tippee, was recalled due to mould risk
"Mould ingestion poses a risk of gastrointestinal symptoms, and infections in individuals with compromised immune systems.

The national health agency says it has received one report of illness in Canada that may be linked to the recalled Tommee Tippee cups. Health officials south of the border have received 68 reports of children experiencing diarrhea, vomiting or other symptoms reportedly associated with drinking from a cup with mould in the valve.

An estimated 227,000 affected cups were sold across Canada through various retailers between December 2014 and May 2016.

Customers are advised to immediately stop using the cups and contact Mayborn regarding a free replacement."

You weighed in:

Janet F: "The day I disassembled my child's sippy cup was the last time I ever used one. I would take the simple leaky sippy cups and pack their milk in a big bottle. When it's time for a sip, I'd serve just enough in the sippy cup. Even as they have outgrown the sippy cup stage, I still don't use any bottles that come with straws for anything other than water. If they need a straw, let them use disposables. You can't seem to clean the insides of those straws well enough!"

Danelle L: "One of these is the only one my daughter will use and I totally see how mold can grow in it. We've only used it for water until last night when she had milk in it and you simply can not get the milk out of the little white thing...Darn! They worked too well I guess."

SUMMER VACATION

Written by Beth Fornauf; Photo: Fotolia.com

Frazzled parents with bags under their eyes; overtired toddlers kicking the seats in front of them; wailing infants unable to handle changes in air pressure. If you've ever flown on a plane, you've witnessed the sights (and sounds) of traveling with little ones. Flying is tough on everyone in the family, but parents with young children have an especially difficult time. Ask any mom or dad and they'll tell you the same thing: disrupting the routines of infants and toddlers is asking for trouble.

Air travel is fraught with stressors and curveballs. Travelers are at the mercy of weather delays, gate changes, lost luggage and a host of other unforeseen issues. But it is possible to fly the friendly skies when you have young children.

Read on to find out how some simple research and a little planning can help ensure that your vacation has a smooth takeoff.

Do you remember family vacations from when you were a child? Was packing done in a frenzy, and at the last minute? Or did you just calmly walk out the door with your family because your parents did all of the planning and packing? Growing up, my brothers and I did little to get ready, other than to straggle into the car during the wee hours of the morning.

Here are some tips to prepare for a fun vacation that involves the entire family from planning through returning home. As a mom of four, there are tips I've been using and fine-tuning for close to two decades. These tips will help alleviate your stress in planning and preparation.

If you have ever traveled with small children, you know how nerve-racking it can be. The stress level kicks up a notch when you are flying. Even short trips can be exasperating with an inconsolable toddler or multiple children. Maintenance delays and aircraft issues, traffic jams and construction, and many other un-anticipated issues often extend an already exhausting experience. Luckily, with a little bit of pre-planning, there are some easy ways to keep the kids occupied and happy while traveling, even on long trips.
