Bugle Calls
Issue No. 1015
August 2014
The Catholic Press Association invited me to present at the annual Catholic Bob Bugle-B-1001 Media Conference which was held a few weeks ago in Charlotte, NC. I was delighted to accept.

The title of the presentation was "Diocesan Publication Websites and the New Evangelization".

The August issue of "Bugle Calls" draws heavily from this presentation, and focuses on what's working and what isn't regarding diocesan level communications. We'll also discuss the important role diocesan publication websites can and indeed must play in combination with print and social media as part of the New Evangelization efforts both inside and outside the Church.

As always, we welcome feedback from our readers including suggestions for future topics.  We hope you find value in receiving "Bugle Calls", and encourage you to forward a copy to a friend, acquaintance or business associate so they can benefit from the information as well.

"A High Tide Raises All Boats" as the saying goes. As each of us work together and share our knowledge and experience, we and our organizations benefit.

Diocesan Publication Websites and the New Evangelization
By Bob Bugle

Bob Bugle-B-1001 Over the course of 2013 we surveyed all 152 diocesan publications in the United States that accept advertising in order to determine which of them also have a website that accepts advertising and can provide proof of performance. During this time I also reviewed research contained in the report from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) titled "Catholic New Media Use in the United States", 2012.

Having gone through this process, I became acutely aware that the larger questions went well beyond which diocesan publication websites accept ad placements and can provide proof of performance. What percentage of Catholics are reached on a diocesan level via diocesan owned media?  Where in the list of priorities does/should the Church's communication efforts rank?

I'll be glad to forward a complete copy of the presentation to anyone requesting it.

Here are some of the highlights:

Bishop John Wester, Chair Communications Committee Address Given at the USCCB General Assembly Meeting, June 2012

The past twenty years have been a dizzying series
of breakthroughs and  game-changing advances in communications. Our modern world is simply not the same.

Points from address:
  • Twenty years ago, there were fewer than one thousand Internet sites.
  • Today there are perhaps 650 million of them.
  • The truth of our faith has not changed. Our Tradition-capital "T"-has not changed.
  • But the people of our dioceses are living in a new world.
  • The communications future that we were promised long ago is here right now.

"Bugle Calls takes me away from the busy day and reacquaints me with the basics of sales, marketing and life. For example,  I'm a big fan of  motivational materials, so revisiting  Steven R.  Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People"  has been very helpful. Keep up the good work!"
