Pastor Mara Ahles-Iverson and Bishop Hoyme celebrated the 125th anniversary of Northfield Lutheran Church Sunday, Oct. 26.

This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of October 26, 2014

We are a church that is deeply rooted--and always being made new.

Our roots are in Scripture, tradition and the Lutheran Confessions, as well as in the vibrant communities and rich histories of our congregations. These roots are an ongoing source of nourishment; they enable us to be a church guided by the Holy Spirit that is both resilient and always being reformed.

This week the synod staff will pray for:

All who have affirmed their baptism this fall.

Those who labor in the fields during this harvest season.

All who work in health care and daily risk their own health to help others.

We invite you to include them in your prayers this week as well.

Deeply rooted and always being made new

The Rev. Greg Kaufmann, Bonnie Weber and directors from the Association of Lutheran Resource Centers (ALRC) met with Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton at the ELCA churchwide offices last week. The group worked on putting together a strategy for combining their centers/talents using social media for the sake of the whole church. Watch for more details about their work in the coming months.

Time for Change
(when you change your time) Sunday, November 2

As the ELCA Malaria Campaign draws to a close, our synod is $29,000 short of reaching our $300,000 financial goal and 66 congregations short of reaching our 100% participation goal. However, it's not too late!

November 2 is All Saints Sunday. What better time to dedicate effort to fighting Malaria-a preventable and curable disease that continues to take one life every minute in Malawi and other parts of the world? That's right. Every minute a person-often a young child or pregnant woman-dies from Malaria. You can help by supporting the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

Here's a fun and easy idea to get started:

  • During worship November 2, light one candle per minute or ring a chime every minute (or do both) to represent the person who died that very minute from Malaria.
  • Use a special litany (that will be available soon from John Sutherland) to call attention to and pray for victims of Malaria.
  • Set a goal for your congregation. What a difference it could make if every congregation donated $1 for every minute of worship November 2!
  • Collect a noisy offering (pocket change in cans) to call attention to the "Time for Change" theme.

Whatever you do, please get involved and send your gifts to the synod office with the notation "Malaria Campaign."

And remember to set your clocks back November 2!
