Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of CUGH,

I would like to extend our gratitude to those of you who responded to our appeal on behalf of MSF for experienced professionals to assist them in their outstanding work combatting the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa. They received a very good response from our members. USAID needs health care workers, and their request can be found here. We would like to congratulate the US government for their recent significant response to this tragedy. We hope other countries will increase their support and collaborate with the US, WHO, MSF, and other organizations to stop the spread of this deadly virus and use this as an opportunity to collaborate with the affected West African countries to build long-term, sustainable health systems.

I was honored to attend the Triangle Global Health Consortium's (TGHC) first annual conference: Innovations in Global Health: Bridging the innovation gap between research and implementation. It was an outstanding event. Congratulations goes to our Board Member and program co-chair, Dr. Peggy Bentley from UNC Chapel Hill, and Claire Neal, their executive director.

This week we are participating in an extensive lobbying effort on Capitol Hill in support of medical research. We will show the incredible health, economic, and social benefits investments in research proivde to the American people.

Please see the attached article about our superb Chair Emeritas, Dr. Judy Wasserheit, published in the Lancet. It is a wonderful piece about a highly respected leader in global health who has given so much to CUGh as our past chair.

Lastly, please note that the deadline for submitting abstracts for our exciting 2015 global health conference is Oct. 15, 2014. We have a stellar group of speakers and new opportunities to engage some of the leading figures in global health.

Best wishes,

Keith Martin, MD

1. Spotlight:
"Judy Wasserheit: positively global"
Written by Geoff Watts, Sept. 13, 2014

Like others whose medical careers began before the creation of global health as an identifiable discipline, Judy Wasserheit has moved away from a background dominated by biomedical models, and gone on to embrace a variety of social and environmental factors from inequality to climate change. At the start of this month, she took over as Chair of the University of Washington's Department of Global Heath in Seattle, USA.It's an exceptionally interdisciplinary job, comments Peter Piot, Professor of Global Health and Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. "Judy will be dealing with people with backgrounds from economics to architecture. But she's a team player. She can bring people and institutions together. And that's important. Washington has one of the largest departments, and it spans two schools, medicine and public health." Wasserheit's own confi dence in her new role is well founded. As Vice-Chair of the Department since it was created some 8 years ago and as its Professor of Global Health and Medicine, she already knows the place from the inside. Wasserheit also knows the satisfactions of working there. Throughout her career she's looked for three things: to be somewhere she can make a diff erence; to go on learning; and to have fun. At Washington, she says, she has all three...

6. Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition
 Dear friends,

Safeguarding health from violence is rising on the global agenda. This month, the UN Security Council's discussion on protecting children in armed conflict included considerable attention to the need to protect schools and hospitals. At upcoming high-level meetings at the General Assembly, a panel discussion that includes Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and H.E. Boerge Brende, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, will address concrete steps needed to address the problem. The Global Health and Foreign Policy group, composed of Brazil, France, Indonesia, Norway, Senegal, South Africa, and Thailand, is working on a resolution at the UN General Assembly on violence as a barrier to access to health care. The group is currently chaired by Norway and the resolution is expected to be negotiated in New York in the General Assembly plenary in October and November. The Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition is supporting this effort and looks forward to working with states toward action at the General Assembly.

The Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI)
Competition ends Monday, Oct. 20th

The Emory Global Health Institute's (EGHI) 2015 International Emory Global Health Case Competition Application Site is now live! The application site should provide all pertinent information about this year's competition.

The application period for our 2015 international competition will begin at 9:00 am EDT Monday, October 6th and end at 11:59 pm EDT, Monday, October 20th, 2014. As in previous years, EGHI will accept applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, so prepare to apply early as the 23 available spots fill up quickly. EGHI will accept one team per university and will alert universities of their status by Tuesday, October 21st.

Please note that EGHI has moved the application period up a month this year to provide universities with more time to conduct their own intramural global health case competitions. If your university plans to coordinate an intramural competition and send the winning team to Emory's competition in March, EGHI strongly encourages you to hold your intramural competition between November 2014 and mid-February 2015. This should provide your university with ample time to determine who your university's team members will be and provide to EGHI team members' individual information by the February 27, 2015 deadline.

The Emory Global Health Institute hopes your university plans to participate in the 2015 International Emory Global Health Case Competition!
