BOMPLENAZO HIGHLIGHTED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES
From October 10 to 12, the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture presented the 8th biennial celebration of Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance, BomPlenazo 2014.
The two-hour BomPlenazo Artists Collective concert on Saturday was covered by The New York Times renowned music writer, Ben Ratliff. The concert was a main highlight of the BomPlenazo festival, as it featured 20 of the leading bomba and plena artists in New York, who came together for the first time under the direction of National Heritage Fellow Juan Guti�rrez.

THE 2014 HOSTOS TEACHER TRAINING STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM COLLABORATORS AND PARTICIPANTS HONORED
On June 30, the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic celebrated National Teachers' Day with an awards ceremony. At this event, the Hon. Carlos Amarante Baret, Minister of Education, recognized three outstanding educators who participated in this year's Hostos Teacher Training Study Abroad Program (TTSAP). The delegation attended a series of events, including a mass in commemoration of National Teachers' Day in La Catedral Primada de Am�rica.

HOSTOS CELEBRATES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF STUDENT-PARENTS THEIR CHILDREN, AND THE ASPEN INSTITUTE ASCEND FUND PROGRAM
Earlier this year, it was announced that a $50,000 grant from the Aspen Institute Ascend Fund would allow Hostos to implement a pilot program called the Ascend Fund Summer Program; a national initiative that takes a "two-generation" approach to help families improve their lives. The Ascend Fund Summer Program proved to be a success and registered an 88% retention rate allowing most program participants to stay in College.

FROM WICK TO MOTT HAVEN OPENING AT THE LONGWOOD ART GALLERY AT HOSTOS
Professor Scott traveled from Scotland, where he has been on sabbatical, to attend the "From Wick To Mott Haven: The Magic Realism of Ian Charles Scott" exhibit opening curated by Assistant Professor Sarah Sandman. The exhibit features 26 paintings where magical elements are a natural part of an otherwise mundane environment that bring to life an extended cast of characters - ministers, boxers, art critics - that stretch from Scott's hometown of Wick in remote Northern Scotland to his studio at Hostos Community College in the Mott Haven district of the Bronx.

1970s ALUMNI ATTEND RAM�N JIM�NEZ'S TRIBUTE AT HOSTOS A group of Hostos alumni from the 1970s attended the Ram�n Jim�nez tribute held at the College on September 19, 2014. Roberto Lugo '77, Milton Quintana '75, Nilsa Saniel, Maria O'Neill '85, Juan (Papo) Ram�n Ort�z '84, Madelyn Olmeda '75, and Ponce Laspina '76, all active players in the struggle to Save Hostos became emotional remembering being arrested after marching to City Hall and the CUNY Central Office all those years ago.
