AN INTRODUCTION TO GESTALT THEORY AND PRACTICE

 

The holistic and humanistic principals fundamental to Gestalt work will be emphasized. The presentation will contain both a didactic and experiential component and attendees may participate in whatever way they choose. Ms. Bristol will offer an opportunity to observe Gestalt therapy 'in action' if possible.

Educational Goals/Expected Outcomes:

  • Participants will leave with a working understanding of the holistic and humanistic foundations of Gestalt Therapy
  • Participants will obtain a conceptual and experiential definition of heightened awareness   
  • Participants will be introduced to theoretical concepts such as perceptual field theory, somatic counter-transference, creative adjustment, and dialogical intervention style.

Nancy Bristol, MSW, LCSW, DCSW

Nancy Bristol began her professional career in 1974 as the designer and organizer of alternative adult education programs in Essex and Union Counties, NJ in conjunction with the Alternative Learning Center, which she co-founded. She then worked with the Jewish Community Center in Plainfield, NJ creating programs for single parents and their children. Ms. Bristol also served as the Social Worker for a day care center working with parent/child issues and as the Counseling Coordinator for the Battered Women's Project in Union County.

 Nancy Bristol acquired additional training from Organizational Renewal (consulting skills). The New York Society of Clinical Psychologists, American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, The Association for Humanistic Psychology, Sexual Therapy Clinic of United Hospitals, and the New Jersey Association for Mental Health. Additionally she has attended seminars in Feldenkrais Method of Awareness and Body-mind Integration. Nancy has also been a conference coordinator and a presenter of life enrichment and human development workshops for The Association for Humanistic Psychology. 

Ms. Bristol is a New Jersey and New York Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. She has maintained a private practice in New York and New Jersey for over 35 years working with individuals, couples, and groups. She has been teaching Gestalt theory, and supervising therapists in training for over 20 years and directing Gestalt training for therapists and allied professionals since 1990. She completed her post-graduate training at The Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and Training in Manhattan where she has also served on the faculty. Ms. Bristol believes that personal and professional growth can best occur in a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental environment.
