August 1, 2014

A year ago this month, I was writing to you about the tremendous victory in Austin as the omnibus pro-life bill HB 2 finally passed the legislature and was signed into law. Since the implementation of the law, the number of facilities in Texas performing abortions has dropped to 21, and is expected to drop even further to only 8 (2 in Dallas), when the final provision of the law goes into effect on September 1.

But as you have likely seen in our recent communications, the battle rages on as the abortion industry fights back with legal challenges and attempts to open new or re-open previously closed abortion facilities. This Monday, August 4, all pro-life Texans are called to be part of a statewide prayer vigil in Austin outside the courthouse where a legal challenge to HB 2 is being heard, followed by a Pro-Life Primer on keeping abortion centers closed in Texas. The CPLC is sponsoring 3 buses to Austin for this epic event. If you are interested in taking the bus, email splatt@prolifedallas.org to inquire whether any spaces remain available. If you drive yourself or carpool, additional details about the schedule and parking may be found at prolifedallas.org/stand4life.

Unfortunately, we do not need to look as far as Austin to see evidence of Big Abortion re-doubling its deadly efforts. Right here in Dallas, Planned Parenthood is opening a new multi-million dollar mega abortion facility in South Dallas. (Check out Abby Johnson's article on how CPLC broke this news). But the Dallas pro-life community is not taking this lying down -- we know and we claim: "The gates of hell will not prevail"! And we will be there to defend life from the moment the doors are open.

I hope you all can join us for the initial ecumenical Prayer Vigil being held at the site on Saturday, August 16beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a community meeting at 11:30 a.m. at Christ for the Nations Christian Conference Center, featuring experts on the abortion industry and how you can help fight it! A flyer for the event is available here (en espaol) and a bilingual bulletin announcement here. Please help spread the word, and ask your parish to publicize this important event.

Also this month is the special Mass commissioning all of you dedicated Parish Pro-Life Coordinators -- followed by our quarterly meeting announcing projects and plans for the Fall, including special presentations by CPLC Prayer Director Susan Platt on the upcoming 40 Days for Life-Dallas Vigil at the new Planned Parenthood and by Fred Fink and Ashleigh Brown of Birth Choice. Please send a parish representative if you are not able to attend.

Please also mark your calendars for:

As mentioned above, our August Parish Pro-Life Coordinators Meeting will be held at St. Monica. Coincidentally, also in August we celebrate the feasts of St. Monica and her son, St. Augustine. In researching the life of this saint, I learned that she was given in marriage to a pagan, Patricius. She lived with him and a challenging mother-in-law for years. Monica's prayers finally won her husband and mother-in-law to Christianity. Her continued prayers and fasting were also instrumental in converting Augustine from the Arian heresy to Christianity. He became one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church.

In our fast-paced computer world we have forgotten the virtue of patience. St. Monica was very patient both with her husband and son. She did not give up after a few days of prayer and fasting. She knew that God would answer her in due time. Let us continue to pray and fast for life. Let us always be patient as we reflect God's love for all.

Thanks for all you do for life, and God bless!

David
