Board Planning Session

On July 15th, the new Portland CSI Board of Directors met for the Annual Planning Session to set goals and objectives for the upcoming year.  What is it they say?  Great minds think alike?  It must be so because, resoundingly, the Board was on the same page when it came to the direction of the Chapter going forward.  We overwhelmingly agreed on a priority focus on the following:

Goal #1: Education

Goal #2: Young Professional Development

Goal #3: Relationship Building with Industry Partners & Associations

Architectural Scavenger Hunt Recap
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President

The Portland CSI Scavenger Hunt was a hit.  An event begun two years ago with only 12 participants has mushroomed to 35 participants this year. We were joined by a number of students and emerging professionals as we tromped all over the PSU neighborhood trying to solve the clues.

We all learned a little about the area's architectural history and then converged on Rogue Hall for some food, libations and friendly competition. The CSI Kraken Team took first place (with the help of some very observant PSU students) and fun was had by all. Please see the great write up by Inka Bajandas of DJC Oregon who joined us for the event.  READ DJC ARTICLE >

 EDUCATION
Changing of the Educational Guard
Cherise Schacter, CSI, President

The Portland Education Committee took a little break to recharge and plan for the new year. No fear, we are once again kicking it into high gear with plans progressing to expand our Portland CSI Lecture Series with a focus on Building Technology for the 2014/2015 fiscal year.  This series will kick off in September with the first Mock Bid Day event held in Portland CSI in quite some time. More info to come soon!

Our aim will continue to be providing low cost, valuable educational opportunities for our members and anyone else who would like to join us. The bonus is that there is usually beer and pizza involved in the nominal fee (typically $10).  How can you lose with that deal?  Keep your eyes peeled for more details coming soon.

This will be my last write-up as the Chair of the Portland Education Committee.  As my focus shifts to leading the Portland Chapter and the Institute Cert Prep Committee, it is time for new blood to take the helm. Please welcome Jake LaManna, OH Planning+Design, as the new Chair of the Portland Education Committee.

Jake has participated on the committee for the last year and was just recently elected to a director position on the Portland CSI Board of Directors.  Jake is a bright and talented young professional, and I am excited to hand over the reins and watch that talent go to work.  Thank you Jake!

CERTIFICATION
Study up. Exams are here!
Kathy Hempel, CSI, CCCA, Certification Chair, Board Director

Certification exams are coming soon!  Registration opened June 2nd, and exams will be offered September 29 to October 25, 2014 in the US and Canada.

The Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) exam promotes an understanding of contractual agreements, roles, responsibilities, drawings and specifications, construction delivery systems, and how to develop organized, effective construction documents. We do not have a fall CDT Prep Class scheduled at this time.  If we have a significant number of people interested, we would be happy to put something together.

CDT Candidates are encouraged to obtain a copy and read the AIA-A201 General Conditions, the CDT Study Guide and Addendum from the CSI-Institute webpage, located under the"Certification/CDT/Exam Prep" tabs, and become familiar with the CDT exam requirements.

Advanced exams are also available for those who have already received their CDT accreditation:  Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA); Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) and Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR).

Please contact Kathy Hempel at [email protected] with questions about getting your study materials, scheduling your exam or get a class together.

 KRAKEN
Rule #77: People are amazing. Peel back the layers. Go deeper.
Cherise Schacter, CSI ,CDT, #CSIKraken

More evidence that the Portland CSI Kraken Committee message of inspiration, collaboration and change is spreading across the country to other Chapters. Below is a picture of a President's Award issued by Marc Held, President of the Baltimore CSI Chapter (and our hosts for this years CONSTRUCT) to Marvin Kemp, Architect, inspiring CSI Member and self-professed CSI Kraken.  Marvin shares the attitude of the Portland CSI Kraken of "Go Big or Go Home" with a positive and collaborative attitude.  We have been proud to welcome him into the CSI Kraken family.  Congratulations Marvin and thank you Baltimore CSI!

Gratitude!

While there are many who contribute regularly in making Portland CSI one of the most vibrant in the country, each month we like to spotlight just a couple who are going above and beyond.

First, I would like to thank Alicia Clark from Emerick Construction.  Ali is beginning her second year as a Director on the CSI Portland Board, is Chair of the Emerging Professionals Committee, has taken over as Co-Chair of the Programs Committee and is a Member of the Education Committee.  Ali is a dedicated, intelligent and gifted young professional who has shown her true CSI Kraken colors very early in the game.  Ali is an exemplary leader who I am proud to have involved in the Portland CSI Chapter.  This young lady's dedication is an example for all of us.

Second, I would like to thank Linda Joens from Cambria.  Linda, a long-time Portland CSI Member has just joined our Board as a Director as well as Co-Chairing the Programs Committee with Ali Clark.  Linda is truly one of the warmest, most giving, collaborative, fun and friendly people I have ever met.  She maintains a passion and excitement for CSI that is contagious and motivates anyone who comes in contact with her.  I am thrilled to be working with her in the coming year.

Next time you see one of these individuals, take a moment to thank them for their dedication to the Portland Chapter of CSI.
