In 2012, IMLS, the MacArthur Foundation, the Urban Libraries Council and the Association of Science-Technology Centers launched a robust 18-month planning and design process for 24 teen-centered "Learning Labs" across the United States. Join us and other members of the Learning Labs community for a conversation about the project, hear about key findings from NYU's 18-month study and engage in discussion about recommendations in critical areas such as collaboration, teen engagement, space design, staffing models, outcomes and funding strategies.

Check Out the New Library

 

In this month's issue of Public Management magazine, the International City/County Management Association takes a deep look at the public library as a highly relevant place that contributes in important ways to community well-being. The article, Check Out the New Library, features two early adopters of the Edge Initiative - Miami Public Library, OK, and Sacramento Public Library, CA. The article outlines the variety of roles of today's library and five ways for managers to build effective working partnerships with library directors. It also showcases how a manager's "openness to engage the library demonstrates a willingness to take a holistic approach to community problem solving." Read the full article

2014 Joey Rodger Leadership  Award

 

The ULC Joey Rodger Leadership Award provides a $5,000 cash award to a ULC director or senior manager so that she/he has an opportunity to strengthen her/his skills through a structured professional development undertaking. The award may be used to attend an established leadership development program or pursue an individualized program that involves working with a leadership development expert/mentor. NYPL Changes Course

New York Public Library, NY, announced today that it will change course on its plan to re-purpose the flagship research library on 42nd Street into a circulating library. It will instead re-build the longstanding Mid-Manhattan Library on Fifth Avenue. Get the details in today's New York Times article.
