SB 1002 Vetoed
by the Governor
On September, 29 Governor Brown vetoed SB 1002 (De Leon) Aligning Opportunities for Health. SB 1002 would have strengthened alignment between CalFresh and Medi-Cal by requiring that the state seek the necessary federal permissions to use existing eligibility information for CalFresh or Medi-Cal enrollment. Doing so would increase the likelihood that individuals and families receive both the health and nutrition benefits for which they are eligible.
Unfortunately, SB 1002 will not be enacted. However, the Governor's veto does not discount the need to pursue all opportunities to streamline dual enrollment between CalFresh and Medi-Cal. We will continue to pursue these goals and will encourage the administration to take the necessary steps to make these program options available for CalFresh and Medi-Cal eligible Californians.

We appreciate the work of our partners. SB 1002 received great support throughout the legislative session from a diverse group of stakeholders and would not have made it to the Governor's desk otherwise. We will continue working together to improve access to CalFresh!

New CFPA Policy Brief: Healthy, Cost-Effective School Meals Made with USDA Foods CFPA has issued a policy brief urging federal and state leaders to better support the fresh preparation of school meals with minimally processed USDA Foods. Read the policy brief and school district recommendations. link The brief presents principal research findings and policy recommendations from a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthy Eating Research study that examined the nutritional content and cost of preparing school meal entrees by cooking with minimally processed USDA Foods (previously known as "commodities"). In comparison with entrees that were diverted to manufacturers for processing, entrees that were freshly prepared with USDA Foods were often healthier, and generally at a lower total cost. While scratch cooking requires more labor, these higher labor costs were offset by the considerably lower food costs. This research was conducted in partnership with UC Berkeley and the Sarah Samuels Center. The research findings are available in the September 2014 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. link Questions? Contact Tracey Patterson at 510.433.1122 ext. 101
