The Alternative Space at The Goffe Street Armory

October 11 & 12, 2014

The Alternative Space weekend sets New Haven's CWOS apart from other open studio weekends by offering artists from across Connecticut, and those who are interested in creating site-specific works, a unique backdrop to showcase their talents. Each year the Alternative Space provides artists with the chance to show work in vacant historic properties throughout the city, connecting artists and visitors with different areas of New Haven.

For the 17th Annual City-Wide Open Studios (CWOS) festival, Artspace will debut an new curatorial initiative to support the realization of eighteen large-scale site-responsive works in the historic Goffe Street Armory, a vacant 200,000 square foot building that is the site of this year's Alternative Space Weekend, open to the public October 11+12.

These commissions were selected through an open call by CWOS Curator Sarah Fritchey, designed to give artists, architects and performers the opportunity to create work in an unconventional, historic space. The commissions are made possible by an NEA Our Town and Andy Warhol Foundation grant.

MONDAY OCTOBER 13th  + TUESDAY OCTOBER 14th

UNDER THE INFLUENCE:

The Highs and Lows of Drug and Alcohol Use in American Culture

This coming Monday and Tuesday- October 13th and 14th- tune in and turn on to WPKN for two days of exploring this fascinating subject.

Why are we attracted to these mind-altering substances?

Why have they been the 'ruin of many a poor boy?"

Since the turn of the last century artists have been singing about, poking fun at the lamenting over the power of drugs and alcohol in our lives.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE Barely scratches the surface of what artists have had to say about this subject since time immemorial. It's the good, the bad, the funny and the sad. It is, what it is.

What we will be airing is an audio impression of what artists and experts have been saying about drugs and alcohol over the years. WPKN has assembled a list of nearly a thousand songs and comedy bits and many interviews with rehab experts and celebrities commenting about their own experiences and I'm quite sure all of you who are listening could suggest a few more. As always, music continues to reflect our personal, social, cultural and political history over time and within these two days WPKN will be taking an in-depth look at this complex subject and brings WPKN's unique mix of music, commentary, personal stories and community resources to bear in a way that is entertaining, informative and uniquely WPKN.

Please tune in for the full days and pass the word to other that some extraordinary programming is happening on WPKN. We hope you enjoy what you hear. We think it's a fascinating mix of content and we hope that all our efforts will stimulate you to contribute to WPKN somewhere along the way at 203-384-9756. That way we can keep providing you with the provocative, entertaining programming you've become accustomed to getting from WPKN.

We'd like to thank SILVER HILL HOSPITAL who is a sponsor.

We also will have input from Chemical Abuse Services Agency Inc. (CASA), Phoenix House, AA, Liberation Programs, Guidance Center Services of Southold, Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP), CMR Recovery Residence in Northport, NY, Daytop Village, MCCA, and Shatterproof.

WPKN partners with a company based in San Diego called CARS. They work with community radio stations and other non-profits all over the USA. We've worked with them for almost a decade and have enjoyed an excellent relationship. You would be amazed how valuable this service is to WPKN. We regularly receive donation checks from CARS that they have received on our behalf from listeners just like you. WPKN receives 80% of the auction value and CARS receives 20%.

During the entire month, all who donate a car will receive a $50 gas voucher

All who mention that they heard it on the 'Car Bob Show' will help WPKN receive 100% of the proceeds vs. the standard 80%

FAQ's

How will the car be picked up?

We will arrange to have your vehicle towed away at a scheduled time convenient for you. The vehicle will be picked up by a licensed tow company at no cost to you and will be taken to our sale location.

How long will it take to pick up my car?

We will contact you to schedule an appointment within two to three business days at the most. If you need your car picked up sooner, please call us toll-free at 877-WPKN-CAR or 877-975-6227 seven days a week. We may be able to make those arrangements as well.

How does the new law effect my tax deduction?

Donors will no longer be responsible for determining the deductible value of their donation. Instead, they will receive IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes if the proceeds from the sale exceed $500, stating the amount of the gross proceeds from the sale of the donated vehicle. The amount listed on IRS Form 1098-C will be the gross proceeds of the deductible donation.

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes, our driver will issue a receipt at the time of pick-up. This is not your final tax receipt unless the sale of your vehicle does not exceed $500. This initial acknowledgement will indicate your name as well as the year, make, model and condition of the car you are donating. It will be your only receipt if your vehicle sells for less than $500. An IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds received from your car, provided your vehicle sold for more than $500. This will be your tax receipt for your charitable contribution.

How is the value determined on the vehicle donated?

The value is determined by the gross proceeds raised from the sale of the donated vehicle. You no longer have the burden of determining the value yourself.

What can I claim as a deduction?

According to the tax law effective January 1, 2005, if the claimed value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds of the sale.

What if my car is valued over $5000?

Effective January 1, 2005, you will no longer be required to have vehicles appraised. The value you may claim will be the amount of gross proceeds received from your vehicle.

Does my car have to be running to donate it?

In some cases we can take your car, running or not. However, it must have an engine and be towable. Contact a representative at 877-WPKN-CAR or 877-975-6227 to find out if your vehicle qualifies for pick-up.
