School of the Environment and Sustainability Series  

The School of the Environment and Sustainability Colloquium Series provides the CU and Boulder community with provocative and insightful conversations that provide compelling illustrations of innovative work in the environment and sustainability taking place in Boulder and elsewhere. 

 

The colloquium series is held most Wednesdays this fall semester from 3-4:30 pm in the Old Main Chapel.  Light refreshments will be served from 3-3:30 pm in the Heritage Center on the third floor of Old Main, followed by the featured lecture and Q&A from 3:30-4:30 pm.   

 

The event on Wednesday, October 15 features a lecture presented by Associate Professor Jason Neff, Environmental Studies Program titled "The Past, Present, and Future of Dust in the Western US (or why the west is getting dustier and why you should care!)"

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is a river-based park that encompasses 150 miles of river corridor between Leadville and Lake Pueblo State Park. It is co-managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management. The Arkansas River is the most commercially rafted river in the United States. Common recreational activities along the river corridor include: river rafting (commercial and private), kayaking, fishing, camping, sightseeing, hiking, mountain biking and gold panning.

Ditch and Reservoir Company Alliance Internship 

The Ditch and Reservoir Company Alliance (DARCA) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization. Established in 2001, DARCA is for the benefit of all types of irrigation enterprises - ditch companies, reservoir companies, laterals, private ditches, and irrigation districts.  DARCA's mission is to become the definitive resource for networking, education and advocacy for its members in Colorado. Its approximately 200+ members not only include mutual ditch and reservoir companies but also irrigation districts, municipalities, suppliers, consultants, professors, engineers, and lawyers. It is governed by a geographically diversified 11-member board of directors comprised of ditch company personnel and water experts from across the state.

GO3 Global Ozone Project Internship  

The GO3 Foundation is looking for assistance with its primary program, the Global Ozone (GO3) Project.  In the GO3 Project, students from around the world participate in global research by measuring air pollution at their schools and sharing their data on Google Earth.  The project enables students to use sophisticated instrumentation to learn about air pollution, and seeks to help students develop an understanding of their roles as global citizens and what it means to think globally. Additionally, GO3 students are making history by helping to create the world's first global database of ground level ozone measurements, as well as CO2 and Black Carbon.  They work primarily with high schools, but also colleges and K-8 students. Association of National Park Rangers Ranger Rendezvous Conference

The Ranger Rendezvous conference will be in Estes Park, CO at the YMCA of the Rockies from Oct 22-Oct 26. There are special daily registration rates available for students interested in joining. Ranger Rendezvous is an annual professional conference with trainings and workshops geared towards individuals interested in careers, or volunteer opportunities, with the National Park Service.  To learn more about ANPR, please

CSTPR Noontime Series Presents: Mapping the Political Landscape of Hydraulic Fracturing in Colorado

What is the landscape of hydraulic fracturing politics in Colorado?  How does Colorado politics on this issue compare to other states?  To what extent do people view recent regulations as solving problems in Colorado? This presentation explores these questions using recent data collected in Colorado, Texas, and New York.  The findings and conclusions emphasize areas of agreement and disagreement with strategies for moving forward.

 

The Center for Science and Technology Policy Research is holding this free seminar series through Fall 2014.

CU GOLD Student Leadership Conference November 8 

CU GOLD is the ONLY free and open leadership program at CU and they pride themselves on accepting a variety of people from all years and majors (freshman to grad students!)  They believe that everyone is a leader and their programs are designed to fine-tune and enhance natural leadership abilities through a series of leadership profiling, personality assessments, and other team-building activities.

 

This year's Seventh Annual Leadership Conference will be taking place on Saturday, November 8 from 10am-4:30pm at the UMC, room 235.  The workshops will explore topics in relational 

leadership, social media and personal branding, building a resume, and how to apply leadership in both professional and daily life.  There will be a series of breakout sessions in categories such as cross-cultural communication, social justice, conflict resolution, and service/volunteerism.  Lunch will be  

provided.

Educational Opportunity with Food First to Explore Cuba's Revolutionary Food System, Jan 2015  

Known for being frozen in time, Cuba is light years ahead of most of the world in sustainable farming and agricultural self-reliance. Through its Food Sovereignty Tours program, Oakland-based Food First offers the public a unique opportunity to experience Cuba's groundbreaking advances in sustainable agriculture. Energy Innovation Schultz Lecture October 30th

This year, the lecture will be delivered by James Burke, President and CEO of High Sierra Energy. High Sierra Energy is a leading gatherer, transporter, and marketer of crude oil and NGLs (Natural Gas Liquids) and a growing provider of oilfield water and waste-water handling and disposal services.  The lecture will cover the "Water-Energy Nexus," focusing in the increasing importance of water and waste-water handling and disposal for unconventional oil and gas operations.

 

Schultz Lectureship Series: The Schultz Lectureship Fund was created in 2007 by the generosity of John H. ('53) and Cynthia H. Schultz to support a lecture each year by scholars in the fields of oil and gas, energy, or natural resources law.

Real Food Media Project launches new Film Library and 2015 Contest 

Real Food Media is excited to announce the launch of the 2015 Real Food Media Contest, their second annual short films competition focusing on food, farming, and sustainability.

They are open for submissions until January 5, 2015.

Judges include celebrity chefs Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, Alice Waters, film critics, and more.  Earlybird submission deadline is December 15, 2014 

 

The top 10 films are in the running for cash prizes, showcased at national and international film festivals (even more this year), and online at Pop-Up Film Festivals  - to date, they have received more than 100 requests for these Festivals from around the world.  They have also added new awards for animation, cinematography, and more--and the grand prize winner gets $5,000.

 

They are also launching a new platform featuring more incredible films from the first batch of submissions via our new Real Food Media Film Library, created for educators, organizers, policy makers, good food advocates, and everyone in between.
