Sunday Scripture Verses

1 John 1:1-9
Acts 2:1-11

Authenticity
Fake is out: real is in. Interestingly, we've become people who value genuineness more than accuracy. The two are inseparable. A person's willingness to receive truth determines the probability of genuineness. 1 John reveals that Authentic Christianity exists, it can be known and is the source of confident joy.
This Week's Question ...

It is easy for me to lie about...

Please share your response (anonymously) at the Interactive Space in the SJ lobby. You can also comment on the question each week at the St. John's @ Wash Park Facebook page!

Prayer and Anointing with Oil
God has called us to pray for one another. Even more, God has promised to hear our prayers and to answer. Therefore, we offer individualized prayer following Communion on the second and fourth Sundays of most months.

Prayer:
You are invited forward or into the Chapel to have a prayer leader bring your prayer before God. There is something powerful in bringing our petitions before God, and God can use the care of a brother or sister in the faith to strengthen us, too.

Anointing:
When you come forward for prayer, you will be offered an anointing with oil as well. The person praying for you will ask if you would like to be anointed. The oil is a symbol of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit that God pours out upon us. The person anointing will say words like this, "Receive the sign of the cross to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the Crucified." This mark with oil can be placed on your forehead or upon the back of your hand.

Anointing with oil was a practice prevalent in the Old Testament and commended in the New Testament. It was a common part of worship in the early centuries of the Christian faith, and it offers great blessings today.

Soldier Letter
In our Chapel families at school, the students wrote letters to people in the military. This one was written by Clara, in seventh grade -

Dear Soldier, Thank you for your service. I have many family members that are in or have been in the military. I just want to tell you that we love you, and so does God. If you are ever down, just go to Him. Cast all your anxiety on Him. I wanted to thank you for your service. We are the home of the free because of your braveness.

Thanks be to God!
