The Western Maryland City Ballet Company and The City Ballet School bring you the story of Alice in Wonderland as you've never seen it before. Join Alice on her curious adventures as she chases the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole to meet the Queen of Hearts.

The second annual Faculty Arts Showcase will be presented by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Williamsport High School. The faculty art show will open at 3 p.m. in the auditorium lobby. The concert featuring the teacher concert band and the teacher jazz band will begin at 4 p.m. in the auditorium.

The art show, organized by Lily Clay, art curriculum specialist, will feature more than 15 works by county art teachers. The concert band will be directed by Dr. Stephen Miles, supervisor of visual and performing arts. The jazz band will be led by Scott Benford, band director at South Hagerstown High School. Both music ensembles are comprised of current, former and prospective music educators from the area, along with talented community musicians and other WCPS staff members.

Illustrated Public Lecture: See America with Normal Rockwell by Virginia Mecklenburg: Sunday, June 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Since its debut on the cover of Saturday Evening Post, The Oculist has been a favorite of both Rockwell enthusiasts and baseball fans, young and old.  Featuring original documents related to the creation and acquisition of the painting, as well as rarely seen photographs of studio models and compositional stage sets taken by Norman Rockwell himself, this very special 60th anniversary "focus show" tells the story of how the painting was originally conceived and created, and how it became a treasured highlight of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts collection.

On Sunday afternoon, June 19, the WCMFA will present a public program featuring guest speaker Dr. Virginia Mecklenburg, Chief Curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM).  A specialist on American art and culture, Dr. Mecklenburg served as curator and primary catalogue author for SAAM's 2010 exhibition Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.  To celebrate the WCMFA painting The Oculist, Dr. Mecklenburg will present an illustrated lecture on the topic Seeing America with Norman Rockwell.

The exhibition is organized by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.  The exhibition is sponsored in part by Anne G. & Howard S. Kaylor, Conservit, Inc. and Mr. & Mrs. Peter Franchot.

 

" Art in Public Space " a workshop for artists, sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), will be offered from  1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 10 at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson, 3134 Eastern Avenue in East Baltimore.

This free workshop is for artists who are interested in learning how to apply for public art commissions. Baltimore artist Jann Rosen-Queralt will co-present with MSAC Public Art Program Director Liesel Fenner.

 Art in Public Space will focus on how to find project opportunities, types of public art projects - temporary and permanent, Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP), the application process, developing a proposal, the artist selection process and fabrication. While the emphasis will be on percent-for-art programs, other models will be discussed.

"The workshop will provide information to artists who are currently engaged in or interested in Public Art," said Fenner. "Public art is an opportunity for artists to work at a larger scale, collaborate with communities, and have their work viewed by a larger audience. Public Art reflects a site's history, our culture, and adds meaning, enhancing the sense of place. I look forward to working with Rosen-Queralt whose extensive public art project experience will inspire artists to apply for commissions and enter the field."

Workshop co-presenter  Rosen-Queralt is a three-time MSAC visual art Individual Artist Awardee and teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her focus is on environmental sculpture and public art integrating the diverse fabric of urban areas while maintaining ecological sensitivity to reveal the character and context of the site.   

Fenner has worked in the art and design fields nationally both in the public and private sectors. She was the Public Art Program Manager at Americans for the Arts in Washington DC, and formerly practiced urban design and landscape architecture in the San Francisco Bay Area.
