One of the extra opportunities students in the High Potential/Gifted program are provided is called Project SEEK.

Project SEEK is a summer enrichment program run by the St. Croix River Education District (SCRED) for students in Chisago Lakes and five other school districts.

It is designed for gifted students in grades 1-7 to enhance the regular school-year curriculum. Students can choose courses that interest them.

Your child was automatically recommended for this opportunity. If you did not receive information on it and are interested, please contact Sarah Schmidt at [email protected] or 651-213-2005.

For more information on dates, location and course selection, visit  our school's  High Potential/Gifted Website.

Welcome to our third edition of the the High Potential /Gifted Parent Connection. This newsletter is intended for parents and guardians who have children who were identified as High Potential/Gifted in the Chisago Lakes School District.

In this issue, we are highlighting Project SEEK and exploring  the topic of Intensities. What are intensities and how do they affect my child?

Intensities in High Potential/Gifted Students

Gifted children take in information from the world around them; they react and respond more quickly and intensely than other children. In the gifted community we refer to these as "Intensities" or "Overexcitabilities." There are five major areas in which we can see these intensities in gifted children:
  1. Psychomotor  - movement and surplus of energy
  2. Sensual - enhanced sensory pleasure and expression
  3. Intellectual - intensified activity of the mind
  4. Imaginational - imagination and fantasy
  5. Emotional - feelings intensified

To learn more about intensities click on the articles below.  At the bottom is also a book recommendation for Living with Intensity.

Overexcitability and the Gifted

Living with Intensity
Edited by Susan Daniels, Ph.D. & Michael M. Piechowski, Ph.D.

The book Living with Intensity is based on Dabrowski's concepts of overexcitabilities. It covers the effects of intensities across the lifespans ~ from childhood into adulthood. It will assist parents, teachers, and clinicians in understanding and nurturing the combination of intellectual advancement and intensities. The High Potential/Gifted Committee greatly recommends this read for parents of high potential/gifted children.
