President's Message-May 2016
Dear all,
We are just days away from the annual conference, this time in Anaheim, California. In both tracks of sustainable development (Applied Solutions and ISERC) 60 presentations are scheduled; of these 22 involve scientific papers that will be published in the conference proceedings. This shows that the participation is increasing in terms of quality and numbers.

Announcing Division Award Winners
The Excellence in Teaching of Sustainability Award
The Sustainable Development Division will recognize
Gregory Weisenborn, Ph.D., Department Chair and Associate Professor of Management at Fort Hays State University, for his contribution towards advancing the knowledge and practice of sustainability in the field of industrial engineering. Dr. Weisenborn will receive the third "Excellence in Teaching Sustainability" award for 2016 at the annual IIE Conference in Anaheim.
Best Paper Award
It is the first time that the SDD track in ISERC proposes the Best Paper Award. Accordingly, Sunghoon Chung from the Binghamton University has been awarded for his paper: "Evacuation Planning under Uncertainty using Public Transit Systems".
Best Student Paper Award
Seven papers were short-listed to decide who would be the winner for the Best Student Paper award this year. After a very close analysis, the "Best Student Paper Award" will be awarded to Pranay Devnani, from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for his outstanding paper titled "Cloud Based End-of-Life Product Recovery". Congratulations to all the participants as each year this category is becoming more and more competitive and shows the future that this topic has in the IISE discipline.

Community outreach project in Anaheim
Every year, the Sustainable Development Division selects a deserving nonprofit organization in the community where the annual conference will be held to give our time and contribute with our engineering skills. This year the organization selected is "Habitat for Humanity ReStore" in Anaheim, California. On Saturday, May 21, more than 30 volunteers will help with organization of the construction and home building materials for sale, evaluate and improve process flow, teach lean, industrial and systems thinking concepts to employees and assist with tasks that need to be completed around the store.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price. ReStores are independently owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. Proceeds are used to help build strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter in local communities and around the world.

As reported in Volume 8, this new section aims at supporting our members in gaining a richer understanding on different topics concerning sustainable development. The body of knowledge aims at transferring knowledge to be used by members of the Sustainable Division to guide their practice or work. In this section we will be sharing concepts, terms and courses offered by different organizations.
An initial effort on which we may build additional resources can be seen at
here. Additional information will be included in the next weeks. Comments on this effort and links that you consider of value for all of us are more than welcome.

These free* one-hour presentations are a benefit of your IIE membership. They are presented by knowledgeable professionals and experienced volunteers provide deeper insight into topics and issues involving industrial engineers and industrial engineering-related disciplines.
Previous Sustainable Division webinars include "Exposing Undergraduate Students to Sustainable Manufacturing Principles," "Getting Green Done," "Industrial Engineering and Sustainability," and "Biofuels Process: Sustainable Production of Ethanol and Green Crude."
*Webinars presented by the Society for Health Systems and the Society for Engineering and Management Systems require membership in those societies to attend.

About the Division
The Sustainable Development Division involves 2,341 members, from which 1,802 are students, 195 academics and 344 from the industry professionals. This number asks for a stronger commitment from the group of volunteers. If you want to get involved in any of the current operations or to propose a new one, don't hesitate to contact us.
