Business, Labour & Community: Planning for Prosperity!

Lionel Laroche shares his personal story and tips to inspire internationally trained professionals at WPH's Global Hamilton Conference

Lionel Laroche As Lionel Laroche, of MultiCultural Business Solutions explained in his keynote address to a room full of internationally trained professionals (ITP) on November 26/14 understanding the nuances of Canadian workplace culture are crucial to one's career success in Canada.

As an immigrant to Canada from France, Laroche found himself in the position of being passed over for promotion because he didn't interact well with his colleagues.

He possessed the technical skills to be highly successful in his career, but a lack of soft skills was holding him back, a common problem for many ITP.

Laroche's address, "Succeeding Professionally in Canada", emphasized key points to help ITP make the most of their new careers in Canada.
A new book sheds light on what motivates workers

A recently released book by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton, called "What Motivates Me: Putting Our Passions to Work" will help you figure out if you (and your staff) are thinkers, achievers, builders, caregivers or reward-driven. While on the job each type of person is motivated by different things.

Twenty-three different workplace motivators were identified by reviewing a decade of workplace surveys, completed by more than 850,000 people.

As the authors explain, "One of the best and simplest ways for leaders to help their team members be more successful and accomplish more is to have them understand their motivations and do just a little sculpting of the nature of their jobs or tasks to better match duties with passions. This can uncover subtle changes that can lead to big increases in morale, engagement and results."
