Thousands Expected For TOSRV
Annual bike ride this Mother's Day weekend
Central and southern Ohio roadways will be busy this Mother's Day weekend, as bicyclists join motorists for the annual Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV) bike ride.
On May 7 and 8, bicyclists will make their way from Columbus to Portsmouth and back as part of the 55th annual TOSRV ride. Sponsored by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, a volunteer-based organization that provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities, the TOSRV is one of the country's largest bicycle touring weekends.
Organizers of this year's event anticipate more than 2,000 bicyclists will be touring the region, following along the Scioto River between central Ohio and the Ohio River. Althoughsome bicyclists may choose to travel along different roadways, the organization has a planned route from Columbus to Portsmouth that will take riders over 210 miles of roadway through the heart of the valley.
In part, the route includes High Street in downtown Columbus and Dering, Parsons, Lockbourne, Rohr and Pontius roads in Franklin County; Walnut Creek Pike, various local streets in Circleville, U.S. 22, Mill Road, Canal Road and S.R. 104 in Pickaway County; S.R. 104, various local routes in Chillicothe, Charleston Pike, Schrader Road, U.S. 50, Old U.S. 35 and Higby Road in Ross County; Higby Road, S.R. 335, S.R. 552, S.R. 220, Boswell Run and S.R. 104 in Pike County; and S.R. 104/73 in Scioto County, as well as Second Street in Portsmouth.
"During the upcoming weekend bike tour and whenever traveling alongside bicyclists, there is a heightened need for safety, and motorists are reminded to share the road, drive responsibly and exercise additional caution," said Vaughn Wilson, Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 Deputy Director.

SUMMER ARRIVES with
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY
and PARROTS of the CARIBBEAN
Sugarloaf Mountain will get tropical as Southern Ohioans dig out their island-wear, dust off their leis and grab their shades to party with the number one Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country, the Parrots of the Caribbean! Summer will officially arrive in Chillicothe with Parrots of the Caribbean on Saturday, June 4 for a 7:00 pm concert. The POTC band performs a high-energy, original stage show featuring a "Salute to Jimmy Buffett". These seasoned professionals perform Buffett's biggest songs, their own original Cajun country-rock hits, along with wild and crazy and sometimes outrageous stage show antics. The band has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada for over a decade. In 2012 they performed for our Troops in Okinawa Japan.
The five musicians who make up the Parrots of the Caribbean exemplify a wide variety of talent. Dave Albrecht, lead singer began his career impersonating "Elwood Blues," the Dan Akroyd character for a Blues Brothers Band. After traveling with it for five years he joined "Legends in Concert" a top-ranked show of impersonators in Las Vegas. He eventually transitioned to his Jimmy Buffett act gathering the finest seasoned musicians. Jeff "Hawaiian Hillbilly" Cline on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals is as diverse in his styles of music as his heritage. With his Polynesian mother and Air Force father he grew up in three states and German. On keyboard, Kenny "Tips" Rice, called "The Professor" brings more than 40 years of professional musical performance. A classically trained pianist, Rice has transitioned to all musical genres and an assortment of groups. He has opened for such artists as Edgar Winter, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, George Carlin, Michael Bolton and Willie Nelson. Greg Martin on percussion and vocals has been performing for nearly 40 years across the country and abroad. Gary "Riptide" Rigmaiden on bass and back-up vocals hails from the Golf Coast of Louisiana and spent part of his youth in Spain and Brazil. For him the island music, songs of the sea, bayou themes and beachcomber blues of Jimmy Buffet's music are right at home.
"A Parrots of the Caribbean concert is one of the most fun nights you can have anywhere doing anything. We'll have margaritas, cheeseburgers, beach balls and expect everyone to dress appropriately with tasteless Hawaiian shirts and flip flops. Let's celebrate the arrival of summer together!" Said Scioto Society CEO, Brandon Smith.
Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in advance and $25 day of show. Concerts are rain or shine events and all sales are final. There will be no opening act.

COMMUNITY LEADERS NEEDED
for Chronic Disease and Diabetes
Interested in being trained to help your community better manage their chronic disease or diabetes conditions? The Area Agency on Aging District 7 (AAA7) is looking for community leaders to assist with facilitating its Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-Management Classes. Community, or lay, leaders will continue to support the classes in their individual communities after they complete training through the AAA7. An upcoming training is scheduled in Portsmouth beginning May 16th for those individuals who are interested in serving as a lay leader in their community.
Self-management programs for people with chronic conditions and diabetes are designed to help those with chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis and diabetes, learn to manage their conditions and take control of their health. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) and Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) was created at Stanford University and is a proven community initiative that provides health benefits and promotes disease prevention.
CDSMP and DSMP are six-session workshops that meet once a week where participants learn how to minimize symptoms such as fatigue, pain, stress and depression. It teaches skills for communication, managing medications, better breathing, and how to design your own self-management program. The program focuses on the participants' role in managing their illnesses and building their confidence so that they can be successful in adopting healthier behaviors. Workshops are highly interactive, where workshop leaders, as well as group members, provide support while learning new techniques for dealing with symptoms.
To expand this evidence-based program, the AAA7 is looking for individuals to become trained lay leaders. Lay leaders are volunteers who typically have chronic conditions or diabetes themselves and conduct workshops using the prepared curriculum. They complete a training program where they are mentored by master trainers. An essential element to these six-session workshops is that they are held in community-based settings, such as senior centers, faith-based organizations and libraries, with most led by certified and trained lay leaders rather than medical professionals.
The upcoming Lay Leader Training will take place in Portsmouth, Ohio, May 16th, 17th, 18th and 23rd for the CDSMP, and May 24th and 25th for DSMP. The training will take place from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm each day at Southern Ohio Medical Center's East Campus, located at 2201 25th Street in Portsmouth. Those who are interested must attend all six days in order to be certified to lead the programs. Attendees will be provided with in-depth information needed to conduct the workshops and receive the materials at no cost. As all workshops are designed to be facilitated by two trainers, it is strongly suggested that you bring someone with you that you prefer to lead the classes with you.
A pre-screening is required of all applicants who express an interest in serving as a lay leader. For more information about registering for the lay leader training, please call Carla Cox at 1-800-528-7277, extension 22284, or Breanna Williams at extension 22247 no later than May 11th.
Your local Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. provides services on a non-discriminatory basis. These services are available to help older adults and those with disabilities live safely and independently in their own homes through services paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, other federal and state resources, as well as private pay. The AAA7's Resource Center is also available to anyone in the community looking for information or assistance with long-term care options. Available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm, the Resource Center is a valuable contact for learning more about options and what programs and services are available for assistance.
Those interested in learning more can call toll-free at 1-800-582-7277 (TTY: 711). Here, individuals can speak directly with a nurse or social worker who will assist them with information surrounding the programs and services that are available to best serve their needs. The Agency also offers an in-home assessment at no cost for those who are interested in learning more. Information is also available on www.aaa7.org, or the Agency can be contacted through e-mail at info@aaa7.org. The Agency also has a Facebook page located at www.facebook.com/AreaAgencyOnAgingDistrict7.
