Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
|
This week, I spoke to the junior high students about some moments in the Torah when we see people turning to Hashem under very different circumstances. When Yaakov and Yosef reunite, the Torah describes |
|
Yosef's reaction and excitement but is silent about Yaakov's. Rashi explains that this is because Yaakov was saying the Shema. He celebrated this happiest moment of his life by being quiet, turning to Hashem, and thanking Him.
So too, the Torah describes Aharon's reaction to the death of his sons, with the words "vayidom Aharon" - and Aharon was silent. One could understand this to mean acceptance - that Aharon simply accepted his sons' death as Hashem's will and had nothing to say. However, one could also understand it as utter confusion, that Aharon didn't really grasp what had just happened but nevertheless at that moment, he was silent because he was turning to Hashem.
We are currently in a two week period with many emotional highs and lows. This week, we observed Yom Hashoah and mourned the six million Jewish victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Next week, we have Yom Hazikaron accompanied by more feelings of sadness and loss. But then, we have Yom Haatzmaut which is filled with celebration and happiness. In both types of moments, as we see from the examples in the Torah, we need to turn to Hashem and thank Him.
Rav Tomer Ronen

In advance of Yom Hashoah, our older students were privileged to hear firsthand accounts from Holocaust survivors about their wartime experiences. Fifth graders spoke with Dr. Norbert Bikales who escaped from Berlin to France on a kindertransport when he was ten years old. In France, he was hidden by the Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants (OSE) and he eventually reached the United States in 1946 when he was seventeen years old. Mrs. Asia Shindelman, a cousin of BPY's librarian Sus
an Levin, spoke with junior high students about her family's experience as Lithuanian Jews who were sent to the Jewish ghetto in Shauliai and then to the Shtutthof concentration camp in Germany. She was reunited with her parents after the war but was not able to leave Riga, the capital of Latvia, until 1992 when she immigrated to the United States with her children and grandchildren. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Bikales and Mrs. Shindelman for sharing their stories with our students - we are sure they will never forget them.
BPY fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders participated in a memorial service this morning in observance of Yom Hashoah. Eighth graders lit candles in memory of the victims and read powerful quotes related to the day. The service concluded with Kel Maleh Rachamim and Ani Maamin and was made even more powerful by the students' experiences meeting directly with survivors of the Shoah, an honor that will generally end with their generation.

Junior High Unity Week: The Power of Speech |
This week was "Unity Week: The Power of Speech" in Ben Porat Yosef's junior high school. Unity Week is part of BPY's Ida Wider Maintaining a Caring Community Holocaust Studies program. The program is designed to help
our students develop a deep understanding of the essential nature of all human beings which links us together. The students spent weeks exploring topics related to this theme and through their learning, have become better prepared to enter the larger world with empathy and acceptance of the differences among us.
This week's programming kicked off with an
inspiring shiur with Rabbi Ysoscher Katz. Rabbi Katz spoke about connecting to Hashem through our interactions with others and how our interpersonal relationships can create kedusha. The week ended with an interactive "Unity Museum" designed and curated by the seventh grade and an original
multimedia dramatic performance, produced by the eighth grade under the guidance of Rebecca Lopkin from Envision Theater.

Third Graders Visit New York Botanical Gardens |
Science notebooks in hand, our third graders had a fabulous field trip to the New York Botanical Gardens! They got to study plant adaptations up close in the desert and rainforest exhibits to gain a better understanding of how different plants have developed to survive in these harsh conditions.

Fourth Graders Plant Peas In Grammy's Torah Garden |
Fourth graders worked in Grammy's Torah Garden this week. In addition to planting peas, they learned about some of the many agricultural mitzvot that apply when farming in Israel, including the charitable obligations of pe'ah, leket, and shich'cha.
|
Daglanut practice began this week. We can't wait to share the full performance at next week's Yom Haatzmaut celebration!
|
Our eighth grade Tzeydah Laderech ("Provisions for the Road") program continued this week with Rabbi David Goldfischer from The Frisch Schoolspeaking with our students about "The Secret to Finding Kavana and a Meaningful Prayer Experience." Rabbi Goldfischer challenged the students to think deeply about meaningful prayer experiences they have had and identify what made them so powerful. Thank you Rabbi Goldfischer for leading this enlightening (and entertaining!) learning session!

Managing Your Relationship With Your Difficult Child by Stanley Fischman |
In a recent column, I wrote about suggested ways to boost a child's self-esteem. Earlier this year, I also wrote about the challenging concept of developing a sense of "love energy," through which we try to be less frightened and more loving in our parenting. But what happens when that child is very difficult even for the most conscientious parent, and different strategies are called for? Psychologist Jessie Shepherd of the Life Stone counseling Center offers "Seven ways to maintain a relationship with your defiant child."
