CAWA To Engage the Board of Equalization on the Issue of Agricultural Tax Exemptions
The Association has requested a meeting with the Board of Equalization (BOE) to discuss member issues with the agricultural/farm tax exemption for part stores doing business in agricultural communities and/or selling parts to farming operations. At the behest of a member who was fined by the BOE for not collecting the appropriate sales taxes, CAWA commissioned its attorneys to draft a position paper on the issue and to meet with BOE officials to express concerns and develop solutions to the confusion over the collection of sales tax. CAWA will be alerting its members (only) on the dynamics, cautions and solutions of this type of sales tax exemption. For more information immediately, contact Rodney Pierini, President & CEO at admin@cawa.org or 800.332.2292, ext. 1.
New MAC Appointees Poised for First Meeting
The CAWA Manufacturers Advisory Council (MAC) will be welcoming four new members at the September leadership meetings. Jim Winter of TYC/Genera; Steve Hughes of Centric Parts ; Bob Leone from ADVICS and Ray Ingraham of Mevotech.  They will join other leaders at the September 25-26, 2014 meetings in South San Francisco. Should members want to attend the complete event or the training session on Friday September 26th, click links for details.
CAWA Assists in Building an Industry Network for the Future
CAWA is participating on a steering committee to develop a national "call to action" program for the auto care industry. The program will assist the industry in speaking with a unified voice nationally and engaging in grass roots political action to support or oppose legislation, regulation or initiatives impacting the industry. Click here for details and contact CAWA's President & CEO, Rodney Pierini at admin@cawa.org or 800.332.2292, ext. 1.
CAWA Produced a Successful Legislative Workshop in Arizona
Entitled an "Arizona Legislative Forecast", CAWA conducted a seminar for the NAPA Distribution Center in Phoenix when they hosted their owners from throughout the State in a one day session last month. The essence of the seminar was: (1) identifying highlights of CAWA government affairs accomplishments in Arizona; and (2) what might the upcoming elections bring and what one might expect from the 2015 Legislative Session. Presenters included Rodney Pierini, President & CEO, Arizona Legislative Advocate Stuart Goodman and the Majority Leader of the Senate, John McComish. Should your company be interested in a similar presentation, please contact Rodney Pierini at admin@cawa.org or 800.332.2292, ext. 1.
More and More California Cities Are Considering Minimum Wage Increases
Recent examples include: (1) Oakland voters will consider a November ballot measure to increase the minimum wage for Oakland businesses from the current $9 per hour to $12.25 per hour beginning March 1, 2015, with no gradual implementation for smaller businesses or nonprofits. The ballot measure also contains a proposal for paid sick days, (2) In San Diego, the City Council approved an ordinance that would increase the minimum wage in stages to $11.50 per hour by January 1, 2017. The ordinance also contains an "earned sick leave" provision. However, it's been reported that the San Diego Mayor plans to veto the minimum wage increase. The City Council can override the veto and appears to have the necessary majority to do so (stay tuned), and (3) San Francisco's current minimum wage of $10.74 an hour (adjusted annually) is already higher than the state's $9 per hour minimum wage. Last month, however, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to place a measure on the November ballot to further increase the city's minimum wage.  If approved by voters, the ballot measure will hike the minimum wage gradually over the next several years until it reaches $15 per hour in 2018.
Another Example of an Auto Care Industry Company Giving Back to the Community
The Gates Corporation is proud to be an official partner of Ronald McDonald House Charities. Gates selected this extraordinary organization that benefits both children and their families since it ties into a longstanding company tradition. During the Great Depression, Mrs. Gates decided that she didn't want any children of Gates employees to not have a Christmas present to open. Beginning in the 1930's, she started a program which supplied a present for every child and the program is still alive today. As part of this commitment, they have partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities to provide an opportunity for those of us who are so fortunate, to help others. This commitment includes raising $150,000 to support families that have children battling serious illness. If your company has a similar story of community interest, please forward it to CAWA at admin@cawa.org.
EPA Announces Proposal to End Use of 134a in New Motor Vehicles and Consumer Products
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published in the Federal Register this month a proposed rule that, if finalized, would prohibit the use of 134a as a refrigerant in new motor vehicles beginning in model year 2021. Further, beginning in 2016, EPA is proposing to no longer permit the use of 134a as an aerosol in consumer products some of which are automotive products. For further information, please contact CAWA's Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at Jennifer@perrycom.com or 916.871.0603.
