Week of June 23
July Cover to Cover
Join us for our monthly conference call with Ritu Sharma, Co-Founder and President of Women Thrive Worldwide, on her new book Teach a Woman to Fish: Overcoming Poverty Around the Globe. The call will take place on Wednesday, July 9, at 2:00 PM ET.

to receive dial-in instructions.

As the old axiom goes: "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." But teach a woman to fish, and everyone eats for a lifetime, argues Ritu Sharma in her engaging firsthand account of how women can overcome the forces that keep them in poverty, and how Americans can help facilitate women's upward mobility. She chronicles her travels through four countries -- Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso, Honduras, and Nicaragua -- and the intimate interactions she had with the women living there. Teach a Woman to Fish provides an insider's look at women in poverty, how Washington works, and how change really happens -- from the United States to the rest of the world.

Ritu Sharma is a leading voice on international women's issues and US foreign policy. She is co-founder of Women Thrive Worldwide, a non-profit that places the concerns of women and girls living in poverty at the forefront of U.S. international assistance. Full Bio

Spotlight on Turkey: Summer Study Tour

Forty-eight middle and high school social science teachers from ten World Affairs Councils will be visiting Turkey this summer. The local teachers will participate in a Teacher Study Tour, organized and sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF). The groups will visit Istanbul, Gelibolu (Gallipoli) and Troy, Canakkale, Bursa, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Konya and Catalhoyuk, Cappadocia and Ankara. Throughout the tour, the teachers will have the chance to visit and learn about world-famous cultural, archeological, architectural and natural sites of Turkey and meet with experts, educators and representatives of Turkish civil society. 479 teachers from across the United States have visited Turkey since 2007 under this program.

The study tours are the second tier of a program called Spotlight on Turkey, a nationwide educational program organized by TCF, the World Affairs Councils of America, and its local chapters and funded by a major TCF grant. The year-round program includes a Teacher Workshop on Turkey, the TCF Teacher Study Tours and various cultural programs for students and the general public. Through this program, TCF and WACA aim to increase knowledge about Turkey in local communities, and enhance international learning opportunities for American educators and, in turn, students.
