What follows are some recent writings and presentations by experts in the areas of relationships, family functioning, psychotherapy and Buddhist psychology that I have found interesting and highly applicable to the issues my patients are addressing in treatment:

Romantic Love
A recent study identified the top deal breakers for men and women in both dating and long-term relationships.

In this Shrink Rap Radio interview with sex therapist and author of " Sexual Intelligence: What We Really Want from Sex and How to Get It," Dr. Marty Klein discusses current controversies concerning sexuality including sexual addiction, pornography, consent for sex, false memories of childhood sexual abuse, and common sexual problems including difficulties with sexual  performance and low sexual desire.

From the "Shrink on the Couch" podcast, Marcia Naomi Berger, a licensed clinical social work and author of "Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes a Week to the Relationship You've Always Wanted," offers a compelling personal account of the psychological processes involved in attempting to resolve the emotional pain of divorce.

In this blog article originally published in "Psychology Today," Dr. Stephen Diamond describes the dynamics that lead many to be attracted to, and form romantic relationships with, unfulfilling and inappropriate partners.  In his discussion, Diamond resurrects Freud's important discovery of the "repetition compulsion."

Adolescence and Parenting
An intriguing article recently published by The Wall Street Journal reveals what children learned from sharing the family phone.

The renowned psychiatrist Daniel Siegel describes the remodeling of the brain that occurs during adolescence, including how the processes of pruning and myelination prepare the developing teen for novelty and uncertainty.

The views of English Parliament's childhood adviser Claire Louise Perry on  how parents should monitor the social media use of their children are described in this discussion of a rising controversy.

Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a cognitive neuroscientist, provides an intriguing Ted Talk on the adolescent brain, emphasizing the uneven development of the prefrontal cortex during adolescence and the role of pruning.

Psychotherapy
In this Shrink Rap Radio podcast, psychoanalyst Gary Trosclair (author of "I'm Working On It in Therapy") describes the process of psychotherapy and characterizes what therapy clients actually need to do to make psychotherapy work.

In this episode from "The Psych Files" podcast, how psychotherapy can be applied to distress and problems is discussed, with a focus on what the best therapists do to create the most optimal therapeutic setting.

In this Shrink Rap Radio podcast, Bessel van der Kolk, renowned trauma expert and author of "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma," summarizes his knowledge of how diverse types of trauma impact psychological and emotional well-being.

In this YouTube interview, Dr. Gerald Gargiulo, author of "Psyche, Self, and Soul" and "Broken Fathers, Broken Sons," discusses his view of the benefits of psychotherapy.

Buddhist Psychology, Meditation, and Mindfulness
Primary instructor at the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, CA, Andrea Fella describes the core components of staying with the present moment and the utility of mindfulness for our everyday lives.

In this blog post, Kim Chernin, Ph.D. offers a personal account of her attempt to reckon psychotherapy with Buddhism.
