DA O'Malley Receives Prestigious Award from American Bar Association
|
|
Recently, the American Bar Association announced the recipients of their prestigious Margaret Brent Award for 2016. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O'Malley was honored, the first District Attorney in the nation to be honored with this award.
The award recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of women lawyers who have excelled in their field and have paved the way to success for other women lawyers.
DA O'Malley joins past Margaret Brent honorees such as US Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O'Connor, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Chief Justice of California Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye.
DA O'Malley said “I am deeply humbled and grateful to receive this award. I am thrilled to join such a stellar group of inspiring and trailblazing women advocates.”
An award ceremony for DA O'Malley and the four other recipients will take place at the American Bar Association’s Annual meeting in San Francisco on Sunday, August 7, 2016.

Successful Drug Take Back Day
|
|
On April 30, 2016, the Alameda County DA’s Office participated in the National Drug Take Back Day, in partnership with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration.
DA Inspectors safely and anonymously collected more than 759 pounds of unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription or over-the-counter medication at our disposal sites in Fremont, Alameda, Oakland and Pleasanton.
The day was a great opportunity to rid Alameda County homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs, thereby helping to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft in our community, and keeping our environment free of these chemicals.

Since October last year, the panel has met at seven venues around the state to learn from survivors, health practitioners, prosecutors, advocates and law enforcement about their experiences in fighting human trafficking.
The H.E.A.T. Institute is assessing strengths, gaps and needs in order to develop a visionary strategy to put an end to human trafficking. Find out more about the Institute...

Conviction in Immigration Fraud Case
|
|
On April 20, 2016, DA O’Malley announced the felony grand theft conviction of Defendant Alice Fausto in an immigration fraud case. Defendant Fausto pled no contest to five counts of felony grand theft and was ordered to serve 18 months in county jail, in addition to being ordered to pay restitution of over $50,000 to her victims and being placed on probation for five years.
Between June 2014 and September 2015, Defendant Fausto fraudulently represented herself as a paralegal and solicited business from undocumented members of the local community to assist them in obtaining work permits and visas for themselves and members of their family. Most of the victims paid Fausto in cash. Over fifteen victims came forward alleging that Fausto had taken over $57,000 from them as part of this scheme.
