Upon direction by the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault,  we developed this  exceptional opportunity specifically for college and university administrators to receive critical information and resources, and communicate with federal stakeholders on the topic of Title IX investigations and adjudications. During the past year, we delivered four pilot institutes to evaluate and update this groundbreaking curriculum. Pilot program attendees found the curriculum to be "immediately useful," "practical," and most importantly, taught with "sensitivity."  Upon completing this institute you will be able to:
  • Explain the intricacies and crossovers of Title IX, the Clery Act, criminal investigations, and individual as well as institutional obligations;
  • Identify the effects of trauma and how trauma impacts victims and others involved in investigations;
  • Develop fair and balanced investigation and adjudication processes; and
  • Identify and apply industry evolving practices to conduct a trauma-informed investigation from disclosure and first response to adjudication.

Webinar on Safety and Emergency Planning for Minors on Campus

Many institutions of higher education develop their safety and emergency protocols to meet the needs of the traditional campus community. However, as the spring semester comes to a close, there are often more children and young teenagers on campus. Many come without their parents to attend camps or enrichment programs. Some institutions may run these programs year-round or may partner with local K-12 schools to provide mentoring opportunities, tutoring services, or other college credit programs.

On   May 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM ET , Ann H. Franke, president of Wise Results, LLC, will be joining us for  the next free webinar in our  Campus Public Safety Online  series to discuss  Planning for the Safety of Minors: Routine and Emergency Situations and why it is important for colleges and universities to consider minors in their safety and emergency protocols.

Register by Friday, May 13, 2016 to reserve one of the limited spaces available. One person may register on behalf of a group; these webinars are ideal for multiple participants from one institution or organization. We hope you can join us!

Suicide Rates Highest in Three Decades

According to a new study released by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics on April 22, 2016, suicide rates increased 24 percent between 1999 and 2014, the highest they have been in three decades. The greatest pace of increase came after 2006, and rates increased for both males and females of all ages 10-74. Females aged 10-14 and men aged 45-64 had the largest percent increases in suicide rates, 200% and 43% respectively. This troubling new data was released just days before the beginning of Mental Health Month, observed each May for over 60 years. The new CDC report also confirms that "suicide among adolescents and young adults is increasing and among the leading causes of death for those demographic groups."

Suicide continues to be a major concern on college campuses with issues of contagion and ideation at the forefront of challenges facing suicide prevention specialists. As noted in previous Weekly Snapshot articles discussing mental health, suicide prevention, and suicide contagion, mental health challenges and suicide continue to rise in teens and young adults. The statistics for college students are alarming:
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among 18- to 24-year-olds.
  • Suicide contagion and clusters are more likely among young people in contained communities such as college campuses.
  • The rate of suicide is between .5 and 7.5 per 100,000 among college students.
  • There are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses per year.
  • Suicidal thoughts, making plans for suicide, and suicide attempt are higher among adults aged 18 to 25 than among adults over the age of 26.
  • One in 10 college students has made a plan for suicide.
  • Lifetime thoughts of attempting suicide are reported to occur among 5% of graduate students and 18% of undergraduates.
Suicide prevention resources are available. Check if your campus website has resources on suicide prevention, information for suicide survivors, and help for friends in crisis in addition to other available counseling services. Learn common misperceptions about suicide and warning signs. Please share these resources, and others, with your campus community throughout Mental Health Month.
