Dear Disciples of Jesus at American Lutheran, TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!! Join us for "Moonlight Movie Night" as we enjoy the outdoor summer breeze while watching
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Bring your snacks and lawn chairs for show time at 8:15pm in the parking lot. Our youth will be staying afterwards for "Nocturnalapalooza" a Lock-In for 6th - 12th graders. See details below.
On Sunday we're reminded in Jesus' parable that it's not so easy to separate wheat from weeds in the field of God's world. Thank goodness we can leave that job to God, freeing us up to do good and live out the Gospel where we're planted(Matt. 13:24-30, 36-43).
See you in church, Pastor Gretchen |
WEEKLY UPDATE
We invite all into our inclusive, diverse community of faith as we seek to live the way of Christ's unconditional and reconciling love. Just as Jesus welcomed each person as a beloved child of God, so we welcome people of all ages, races, ethnicity, culture, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic, family or immigration status. Basically if you're breathing, you're welcome here. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey this is a non-judgmental place where doors are open and questions are always invited. Feeling spiritually connected in today's complex society can be challenging. Join us as we grow in faith to do God's work in Christ's name for the life of the world.
"Peace be with you" (John 20:26).
Craft gifts from Africa
On Sunday, stop by the display featuring crafts and jewelry that will serve the Church in East Africa through African Team Ministries. The purchase of these crafts will bring relief to children and those in need through care and education of African orphanages in Tanzania; irrigation systems for growing crops; and jobs for unemployed women as they make crafts.
How are we Generous?
Our synod is participating in a "Generous Life Project" to learn from each other how we are living generously, what sparks that generosity, and how we might help each other respond to the Gospel with time, skills and financial resources. Please join Pastor after worship on Sunday in the nursery/lounge for an informal conversation about what you value about our ministry, how we are generous, and how that generosity extends to our neighbors.
Moonlight Movie Night
Enjoy the outdoor summer breezes tonight while watching "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp. Bring your snacks and lawn chairs and don't forget the kids. Movie starts at 8:15pm sharp.

Council Update
The Congregation Council met on Tues, July 15th. The main business was to draft a counter-proposal to Brighton Hall's offer for use of our Administration building starting in May 2015. Once our negotiations have ended, Council will hold a Congregation Chat to explain our proposal, followed by a Congregational meeting a few weeks later to vote on the recommendation.
Summer Worship
The season of summer coincides with a long period of the church year called Ordinary Time or the Time after Pentecost. The color in worship is green, a color of growth and new life in the natural world and also for us spiritually as we grow into faithful disciples of Jesus. This period allows us the opportunity to see God in the simple, everyday rhythms of life. As Gerard Manley observed, even this ordinary time is
"charged with the grandeur of God." If that is the case, maybe summer can be the beginning of Extraordinary Time as we pay attention to how God is present and active in our daily lives.
On the road?
Summer often brings vacations and travels to other places. If you are away from Burbank, you may find another ELCA congregation for worship as you journey, by visiting www.elca.org and clicking on the link "Find a congregation" by city and state.
"O God, our beginning and our end, you kept Abraham and Sarah in safety throughout the days of their pilgrimage, you led the children of Israel through the midst of the sea, and by a star you led the magi to the infant Jesus. Protect and guide us when we travel. Make our ways safe and our homecomings joyful, and bring us at last to our heavenly home, where you dwell in glory with our Lord Jesus Christ and the life-giving Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen."
Summer Giving
Remember that when you take vacation, your church doesn't! If you know you're gone to be gone and not in worship some Sundays during the summer, please turn in your regular offerings before you leave so we may continue to pay our ongoing bills. Better yet, consider an automated payment through our "Simply Giving" program. It's easy and one less thing to think about! Talk to our Financial Secretary Bob Norgauer [email protected]; 818-730-8315.
Wish List
Our Congregation Council has prioritized a list of items we would like for our ministry that are not included in our general operating budget. Please consider an additional gift beyond your regular giving, perhaps in memory or honor of someone, or just in thanksgiving for our community of faith.
