I hope your training is going well. The racing season is really heating up for many of you. Part of what will get you to the start line with the best fitness and health has to do with how you are eating day-to-day. In this issue's Tip From The Grip I reveal how I ate during my racing career. It's the first time I have shared much of that and I go on to suggest six tips to help you develop an eating strategy that really works.

We caught up with one of our Elite Team Athletes, Toni DaSiva from Brazil, and spoke with him about his 19-year racing career and working with me at  MarkAllenCoaching. I think you'll find it inspiring!

Congratulations to all who were recognized by USA Triathlon as All Americans in the top 10% of their age group. Eight of our Elite Team athletes were among them.

MarkAllenCoaching is for everyone - age-groupers, novices, elite athletes, and pros! If you would like to improve your race performance or simply seek greater enjoyment in the sport, reach out to me at mark@markallencoaching.com and I will put you on the path toward accomplishment of your goals. TIP FROM THE GRIP

What I Ate When I Raced

I was recently asked by one of my coaching clients if I would share what I actually ate when I was racing. He knew that dietary philosophies have evolved significantly over the past twenty years and was curious if it was anything like what is being tested by triathletes today trying to improve their performance. So here it is. Read it if you dare. It might change the way you eat forever!

FEATURED ATHLETE

Meet MarkAllenCoaching Elite Team Member
Antonio Ferreira da Silva Neto

Tell us a little about you.

I'm 37 years old, born in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo - Brazil, I graduated in Physical Education and completed a post-graduate degree in Physiology of Exercise. I've been a triathlete since 1997 and triathlon coach since 2000. Right now I'm living in Cedar Park, Texas with my wife Rae Ferreira da Silva and her son Jonas Heath.

It looks like you started triathlon in 1997 - so about 19 years in the sport! How did you get involved at such a young age? Had you done other sports prior to that?

Yes, I just completed 19 years of training and racing triathlon. My first triathlon was on April 13th 1997. Fortunately I always have been involved with sports. When I was child I was lucky to have the opportunity to study in a excellent private school because my mother was a teacher and I received free scholarship. My physical education teachers introduced soccer, volleyball and basketball; I played basketball in school for 5 years. I also practiced judo when was child. As a teenager I started classic equestrian, swimming and biathlon. I love sports that include interacting with nature.

How long have you worked with Mark? How did you decide to work with him?

It's great, I started working with Mark Allen in 2011. Before that I was coaching myself and fortunately did a good job but I reached a plateau and Mark Allen's approach was ideal to allow me improve my performance as an athlete and also as a coach because I transfer my knowledge to my clients.

In 2011 I contacted some good coaches and Mark Allen was the one that gave me the best answers and I'm happy to be connected with him as an athlete and as a coach. In my view, Mark Allen is still the best triathlete ever because he was able to win all distances in the highest level. And he's also a great person, I got to know him and I have been learning a lot. Simple, true and humble; a great example.

Can you give us a bit of your racing history and PRs?
