Launching Into May i n Our New Facility
Public computers upstairs, on the "quiet floor" of the new library.
We're still discovering how to deliver the best service possible in Edgartown's new $11-million public library building, but real progress was made in April, and we appreciate everyone's patience as we learn the rhythms of managing this beautiful new facility.

One of the challenges for your library staff has involved fashioning policies for the use of library features we've never had to administer before -- because they simply didn't exist. For example, the new Edgartown Library has two small study rooms and one larger room with a circular table upstairs, and these are proving to be quite popular. In April, our first full month of operation here, we recorded nearly 120 hours of patron use in the three rooms. With the busy season approaching, we plan to add some structure on study room use -- perhaps limiting to an hour per patron if other people are asking to use the space. We hope you'll bear with us as we dial this in.

The biggest single change created by the library's move into this new building is that instead of having just two main spaces -- upstairs and down -- we now have four: the children's room, the main floor with its young adult space, tables and benches; the upstairs floor with the library's core adult collection, and the new program room.

In our first month here, we've discovered that this new and larger building format allows us to give Edgartown's patrons something the library really hasn't been able to provide before -- a quiet space that offers the sort of peace and sanctuary that most of us associate with a public library at its very best. To foster this sort of environment, we've designated the second floor of our main building as the library's "quiet space," and we've also begun conversations with a team of acoustic engineers about ways to reduce sound transmission across the library. Again, we hope you'll tell us how you think we're doing, and we ask your patience as we explore ways to make the most of the opportunities presented by our new building.

Library's New Program Space Is Setting
For Films and Crafts in May
On April 30, the Duo Marchand concluded the library's Shakespeare festival with a concert of music from the age of the Bard.

The library plans to present two film programs this month on the 12-foot screen of our beautiful new program room. On Sunday, May 8, the Opera Club will present a 1 p.m. screening of La Traviata. It's a lush production of Verdi's tragic romance from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, starring Angela Gheorgiu and Frank Lopardo. Sir Georg Solti conducts. (Please use the library's south entrance; all adults are welcome.)

On Wednesday, May 11, the library will present a 7 p.m. screening of the 2015 film, "The Big Short." This film is a dramatic retelling of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Winner of Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Writing, it features a fine acting ensemble including Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Brad Pitt. Adam McKay directs. All adults are welcome.

This month's adult crafts project is set for the eve of Mother's Day, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Join our do-it-yourself wiz, Rachael, to make a springtime-fresh, all-natural body scrub for your Mom -- or even for yourself. All materials needed to make this unique bath treat will be provided.
Book Club Meets  May 11

The Edgartown Library Book Club meets at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, to discuss a new historical novel from Kim van Alkemade entitled Orphan Number 8. Historical Novels Review writes: "This book is utterly unputdownable. At once atmospheric, disturbing and absolutely engrossing, it poses a host of moral questions; I fully anticipate that it will become popular with book clubs."
All are welcome to participate in this group, which is facilitated by Jean Stone. If you'd like us to secure a copy of the book for you to read, please call us at 508-627-4221 or visit the library desk.
