iGNA 2016 - A RECAP
by Christopher Irwin
The iGaming North America Conference (IGNA), attended and co-produced by The Innovation Group, took place April 5-7, 2016. The conference itself took on many forms and covered a wide array of topics, most of which did not pertain specifically to iGaming. In fact, the headliners were Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), eSports, and millennials.
eSports, whose championship matches had more viewers than Game 6 of the 2015 NBA finals, and DFS, more widely known for its large online companies of DraftKings and FanDuel, dominated the conference.

by Michael Vanaskie
League of Legends, Defense of the Ancients, Halo, Call of Duty, and Hearthstone. Whether these titles are familiar to you or not, they represent some of the most popular competitive games in the burgeoning industry that is eSports. While eSports may still be an ignorable industry to outsiders, in reality it represents a high-growth industry that is still in its relatively early stages of expansion. To have a clear understanding on the potential of the industry, it is important to have a cursory familiarity of the history of eSports.

by David Rittvo
Brett Abarbanel, Ph.D.
Head, Social & Recreational Gambling Research
UCLA Gambling Studies Program
University of California, Los Angeles
Through her work, Brett Abarbanel is in the unique position to merge the worlds of academia and gaming. Head of Social and Recreational Gambling Research at UCLA's Gambling Studies Program, Brett conducts research in online gambling, eSports, gambling operations and technology use, and responsible gambling and community relations.
Brett's primary areas of industry interaction are threefold. First, conferences are key in her interaction with the gaming world, as they offer her the opportunity to bridge the gap between her department's work and developments in the gaming industry. As a regular panel speaker at industry conferences, Brett enjoys these opportunities to share her group's research, believing that it should be applied in the industry and not limited only to the academic world. Second, her team also engages in consulting projects with various industry players, collaborating research efforts to answer questions through acquired data. Third, Brett's group provides research to government entities in their efforts to implement new laws and regulations, and aids companies in the industry with the creation of new policies.

It has really been interesting to connect with the other Emerging Leaders of Gaming. I have especially enjoyed reading the posts on the Emerging Leaders LinkedIn page. And it's fantastic to be approached by people who already know about me through an excerpt from Global Gaming Business Magazine or one of The Innovation Group's newsletters, especially so early on in my career."
