New Futures E-Newsletter: August 2014

We held our first-ever New Futures Scholars Weekend from August 1-3 on the premises of Community Partner For Love of Children's Outdoor Education Center in West Virginia. The Weekend, which was attended by 50 Scholars from our fall 2013 and spring 2014 Scholar cohorts and facilitated by our staff, aimed to raise Scholars' confidence, help them develop a strong sense of community and deepen their connection to New Futures.

We asked our Scholars to share what they liked best about the Weekend. Here's what a few had to say:

"Meeting Scholars with similar visions of succeeding. It really helped me to continue on achieving my goals. "

"Getting to know the Scholars in my cohort more, along with the spring cohort. We became like a family where we can feed off of each other's positive energy."

"Everything."

Scholars overcame fears on a high ropes course, shared stories over a campfire, and found tranquility in the woods. Many had never before had an outdoor experience like this one. Even making s'mores was a novel activity for several Scholars.

New Futures Scholars openly shared their feelings of accomplishment, confidence and triumph throughout the weekend. We are so proud of our Scholars, and we continue to support them as they explore the path toward post-secondary education and a rewarding career.

7 Scholar Reactions to Our First Scholars Weekend
Scholars perform a trust exercise

Our Scholars made big strides at the first-ever New Futures Scholars Weekend. Here's what some of them shared about the two-day event:

7. The best part was building friendships with other Scholars and learning about teamwork.

6. The zip line...I was TERRIFIED but I did it and I loved it!

5. I liked the ropes course because it broke my
comfort zone as far as communicating and
working with people outside of my race and
ethnicity.

4. Everything about the Weekend helped to build up my confidence.

3. Doing the high ropes course was great. I
promised myself I would conquer my biggest fear (heights) in the hope of being able to share my experience with my future patients!

2. This was the best weekend of my year...I grew up in a rural area like this and I had no idea how much I missed it.

1. Make the Scholars Weekend LONGER!
