Spring Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance, May 5-8

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In Celebration of Mothers

Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival celebrates mothers of all kinds, remembers the origin of the holiday

Pittsboro, NC - This spring, the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance will fall on the first Sunday in May, which is Mothers Day. The event plans to celebrate mothers this Sunday by creating a space to honor all moms in attendance as well as all who cannot attend because of distance or if they are no longer around.

" All moms get in half price on Sunday," says festival coordinator, Sara Waters, "we thought that would help people bring their moms to the festival and help us all celebrate what wonderful beings they are."

In addition to reduced price tickets on Sunday, the festival's program also tells a historical account of the first Mothers Day, which actually began as "Mothers Day for Peace" in 1870, just after the Civil War. Women then, mothers of soldiers, sons who had seen and done terrible things, were tired of war and rallied to bring more peace and justice in order to better society. Mothers Day commemorated women's public activism against all kinds of injustice.

The Mothers' Day Proclamation, by Julia Ward Howe (author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic), states, " We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says 'Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.'"

Waters says, "The festival seeks to bring back that meaning of Mothers Day as we celebrate mothers, but also as we acknowledge all of the hard work women do to bring more peace to the world."

The festival has prepared a special spot in their Peace Park where folks can honor mothers, Mother Earth, or the feminine spirit. Festival-goers are invited to bring an object that reminds them of their mom or to just linger in the space of honor.

Shakori Hills GrassRoots always has a Sunday morning service at 10am during the festival. This spring, the service will be dedicated to the celebration of mothers. Whether bringing a mother out to treat her to a festival, or missing one who has passed away, people will find a way to celebrate at Shakori Hills.
