We would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended our Annual General Meeting a few weeks ago. Our community came together to celebrate successes, thank our supporters, and, most importantly, connect with other women. We posted photos from the event
here.
Our Direct Assistance program received a mountain of shampoo and our cupboards are full of mugs and spoons. Thanks to everyone who brought in the items to donate. If you were unable to bring in your donations on the day of the event, feel free to drop them off during our operating hours.
At the AGM, we also released our
2015 Annual Report. In the report, you will find stories about the impact of our programs and services, how women have connected with each other, and what we're doing to create positive change in Calgary.

Mother's Day Picnic
The Alberta Federation of Labour and its affiliate unions will be hosting a free Mother's Day picnic Sunday, May 8 from 1 - 3 pm at Picnic Site #4 at Bowness Park (8900 48 Ave NW). There will be popcorn, hot dogs, and fun activities for the entire family.

The Scotiabank Marathon is less than four weeks away!
Are you looking for a fun run or walk to kick off the spring season? Sign up for a race at the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon Race Weekend on May 29th and walk/run with volunteers from the Women's Centre. We are proud to be a participating for Scotiabank's Charity Challenge. Child Poverty:
Community Brainstorming Session
The Canadian Poverty Institute is starting a study of child poverty in Calgary to develop a new definition of child poverty which includes different perspectives. The Institute is organising a brainstorming session where participants will work on various themes to offer their opinions on child poverty. The information from this session will aid those who research childcare and who work with children.

Kathleen Lahey, Gender and Economics
The Women's Centre is happy to welcome Professor Lahey for a special meet, greet and talk on Tuesday, May 31 from 6-8 pm. Professor Lahey is the leading Canadian scholar of feminist legal theory and comparative gender impact analysis of economic policy. She has published extensively on income inequality, anti-feminist reactions to economic crises, same-sex marriage, and the gender implications of tax policy.

City Hall 101: Encouraging Women's Participation
 Did you know, only 2 out of 14 city counillors are women? Carol Armes, Executive Assistant to Councillor Druh Farrell of Ward 7 visited the Centre to break myths and discuss ways to engage more with the City.

Leadership Program for Young Women
Are you a young woman, 15-17 years old, and interested in deciding what a leadership program for you should look like? Do you know anyone who fits that description? We need your help!
We are in the process of creating a leadership program for young women at the Women's Centre and need input from possible future participants. We have created a survey where you can provide your input on what you think this leadership program should look like (when you would like for it to take place, what topics you would like to discuss, what change you would like to make in your communities). Please share this widely with young women you think should also participate!

Join us for our annual feminist walking tour as we walk through downtown to discover some of the unknown stories about Calgary's women. We will highlight women's achievements of the past and present and learn about social issues that many women face in the city today.
Girls from the Starburst program at Georges P. Vanier and the Girl Power program at the Women's Centre are partnering to put on this fun walk. Learn about issues affecting girls today and the things they are passionate about, straight from the girls themselves. Please bring open minds, hearts and lots of questions. We will walk rain or shine! Everyone is welcome.
Renée MacKillop, the Project Manager of the Alex Community Food Centre, will be discussing the power of good food, what is food security and what does it mean for our communities. The Alex Community Food Centre will be the first Community Food Centre in Alberta to open this summer- a place where people come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food.
