More than 150 people attended Breakthrough Manchester's second annual "Back to Summer Breakfast" on April 20, 2016. The hour-long event included the announcement of a new, exciting partnership with Southern NH University to develop a high school program component for our Breakthrough students once they complete their three years in middle school.

The speaker who brought down the house, though, was Angela Romilla, a current junior at Central High School and a Breakthrough student alum. Delivering her stories and messages with stunning poise and personality, Angela seemed a bit surprised by the standing ovation she received. As one attendee said, however, "98% of adults are not capable of writing and delivering that kind of speech with that degree of presence."

Our summer hiring is complete! Our summer Breakthrough staff includes sixteen high school and college-age Teaching Fellows, four critical support positions, and six professionals to serve in Instructional Coach, Dean of Students and Leadership Development roles.

Breakthrough welcomes 33 new students
|
Thirty-three rising 7th graders will participate in their first Breakthrough summer this year, joining thirty two returning students.
Together, these sixty-five students represent the diversity of Manchester, including 22 countries of origin: United States, Bosnia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Of these sixty five students:
- 79% would be the first in their families to graduate from college
- 62% qualify for free or reduced lunch;
- 55% represent a racial or ethnic minority;
- 52% speak English as a second language;
- 26% are raised by a single parent or substitute family

Our Mission
The dual missions of Breakthrough Manchester are to launch promising Manchester middle school students, particularly those with limited opportunities, on the path to college while inspiring high school and college students to pursue careers in education.
We do this by:
* Recruiting and selectively admitting high-potential sixth graders with limited opportunities from Manchester middle schools for a tuition-free, three-year program
* Providing three rigorous, joyful academic summers and school year supports to admitted students
* Recruiting, training, mentoring and supporting college students, and some local high-achieving high school students, as excellent teachers
* Connecting with similar programs serving Manchester high schools to create a pipeline of opportunity for Breakthrough students as they enter ninth grade
* Engaging a broad array of stakeholders in understanding, promoting, funding and championing both missions of Breakthrough.
