Tidings from Brother Thoma s

"Caring Citizens of the World" and "Care for our Common Home" are two phrases that came together last month as the students and staff of The De La Salle School observed Earth Day.  Our school's Mission Statement challenges our young men to be the former and Pope Francis's recent encyclical exhorts us to demonstrate the latter.  The Pope's recent words in Laudato Si add to the repository of the Church's social teaching and inspire our newly formed initiative at The De La Salle School called Project Evergreen.

As part of our school's observance we reflected on some of the Pope's words and sought to put them into action.  Student presentations offered specific ways to minimize energy usage and to conserve natural resources, especially water.  Numerous students planted "carton gardens" in the half pint milk containers that once held their noontime beverage.  The expectation is that some flowers will be blooming by Mother's Day so our students can present the "carton gardens" as gifts on that occasion.  A week long e-cycling program resulted in a collection of old mobile phones, old Play Station consoles, old laptop computers, and similar technology items that were subsequently delivered to recycling centers designated for that purpose.

This heightened attention to ecological concerns prods us to listen more intently to "the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor" (Section 49 of Laudato Si).  It was good to see our students and staff tuned in to this message.

"Turn it Off"

The "Turn it Off" campaign has really changed the school.  Now usually the school will turn off the lights every time there is sunlight coming from the windows or outside.  I have learned that doing this helps the environment.  I have also learned that this really saves half of our energy.  It also doesn't just help me, it helps the energy save up because we are not using the lights when it is a waste of energy.  I think that this will help our generations that are coming.  We also can try to save any thing that we are not using.  I also think that our people can have better lives.
