"THE BODY AND THE DREAM"
VII. "The Purpose of Pain"

61 The resurrection of the world awaits your healing and your happiness that you may demonstrate the healing of the world. The holy instant will replace all sin if you but carry its effects with you. And no one will elect to suffer more. What better function could you serve than this? Be healed that you may heal, and suffer not the laws of sin to be applied to you. And truth will be revealed to you who chose to let love's symbols take the place of sin.

What is 'Iambic Pentameter'? 

   The Holy Spirit mediates between

   illusions and the truth. As He must bridge

   the gap between reality and dreams,

   perception leads to knowledge through the grace

   that God has given Him, to be His gift

   to everyone who turns to Him for truth.

   Across the bridge that He provides, are dreams

   all carried to the truth, to be dispelled

   before the light of knowledge. There are sights

   and sounds forever laid aside. And where

   they were perceived before, forgiveness has

   made possible perception's tranquil end.

 

   The goal the Holy Spirit's teaching sets

   is just this end of dreams. For sights and sounds

   must be translated from the witnesses

   of fear to those of love. And when this is

   entirely accomplished, learning has

   achieved the only goal it has in truth.

   For learning, as the Holy Spirit guides

   it to the outcome He perceives for it,

   becomes the means to go beyond itself,

   to be replaced by the Eternal Truth.

 

   If you but knew how much your Father yearns

   to have you recognize your sinlessness,

   you would not let His Voice appeal in vain,

   nor turn away from His replacement for

   the fearful images and dreams you made.

   The Holy Spirit understands the means

   you made, by which you would attain what is

   forever unattainable. And if

   you offer them to Him, He will employ

   the means you made for exile to restore

   your mind to where it truly is at home.

 

   From knowledge, where He has been placed by God,

   the Holy Spirit calls to you, to let

   forgiveness rest upon your dreams, and be

   restored to sanity and peace of mind.

   Without forgiveness will your dreams remain

   to terrify you. And the memory

   of all your Father's Love will not return

   to signify the end of dreams has come.

 

   Accept your Father's gift. It is a call

   from Love to Love, that It be but Itself.

   The Holy Spirit is His gift, by Which

   the quietness of Heaven is restored

   to God's beloved Son. Would you refuse

   to take the function of completing God,

   when all He wills is that you be complete.

    Unless the past is over in my mind,

   the real world must escape my sight. For I

   am really looking nowhere; seeing but

   what is not there. How can I then perceive

   the world forgiveness offers? This the past

   was made to hide, for this the world that can

   be looked on only now. It has no past,

   for what can be forgiven but the past,

   and if it is forgiven, it is gone.

 

    Father, let me not look upon a past

    that is not there. For You have offered me

    Your own replacement, in a present world

    the past has left untouched and free of sin.

    Here is the end of guilt. And here am I

    made ready for Your final step. Shall I

    demand that You wait longer for Your Son

    to find the loveliness You planned to be

The past is over. It can touch me not.

Sarah's Commentary:

We have seen again and again that only our thoughts can cause us distress. Nothing that seems to be happening to us and nothing we seem to have done has any real effects. However, our reactions to the seeming events in our lives, based on our interpretations, create distress for us. These are exactly the perfect opportunities that are there for the healing of our minds. These are the invitations to bring our distressing thoughts to the light of truth. This is the truth that is already in our right minds and has always been there. We can see in everything that is seemingly happening in our lives, our own projections of our sin, which we would rather see in others. when we are upset about anything, we can use these upsets in order to look at our own 'sins' with courage, and with as much honesty as we can turn them all over to the Holy Spirit.

Jesus tells us, "The escape from darkness involves two stages: First, the recognition that darkness cannot hide. This step usually entails fear. Second, the recognition that there is nothing you want to hide even if you could. This step brings escape from fear. When you have become willing to hide nothing, you will not only be willing to enter into communion but will also understand peace and joy." (T.1.IV.1)(ACIM OE T.1.I.22) We think we can hide the dark thoughts that we hold. The idea that there are no private thoughts brings up fear because we hide under the face of innocence and believe that we have accomplished a nice persona that will belie our hateful, judgmental thoughts. The idea that this is not true will bring fear. The idea of revealing our guilt and shame may seem terrifying. Yet, when we see that there is nothing that we want to hide, this brings escape from all fear and is truly liberating. Thus we come to the place where we welcome any hateful, judgmental thoughts because we now recognize that seeing them and bringing them to the light is the only way that we can heal our minds and know our magnificence.
 
Who is it that sees these thoughts? There is a voice in you that is constantly talking, but you don't need to listen. You are the one that is observing this voice. You are not this voice. The voice is the stranger that has walked into your pristine home and made itself at home. If it were not in your mind speaking to you all the time, but were someone outside of your mind talking to you, telling you what to worry about, who to judge and hate, who to dislike, and how to see your world, you would simply tell that someone to go away. Now you are being called to lose interest in your own voice and its constant haranguing so that you can connect with the peace that is really YOU. It is the constancy of the Self that knows that it is at home in God.

We truly don't see anything as it is. Everything that we see is a projection of the thoughts in our minds, which is all of the past! Anything that seems to be happening that creates distress in us is an upset that is seen through association with issues from the past. These issues started in the original moment when we chose the ego thought system and seemed to leave God. Now we believe we had done something irreparable. We have this overwhelming feeling that we have done something terribly wrong, but we don't have any conscious awareness of what that might be. As a result, we feel that we are somehow wrong and there is something in us to be fixed. We are overwhelmed by the guilt of this 'sin', which is too much for us to bear.

The ego made this world of seeming differences, where we can project our guilt on others, in the belief that we are then getting rid of it in ourselves. What the ego has never let us know, is that this is how we keep the guilt! We will only know the purity of our innocence, love and light when we have healed our guilt by recognizing how the ego has set all of this up. The ego's existence depends on us holding onto the guilt, which we do when we project it on others. It keeps talking to us, constantly giving us its interpretation of the events and problems in our lives.

The only cause of any problem that we seem to have is not what is happening but the commotion about it in our own minds that we are attending to. Now we are being called to turn away from it and turn within, to bring the guilt back to the source in our minds where we can be healed. As long as we are project the guilt, it is a way to keep it. When we see that this is how we keep hurting ourselves, we will be motivated to do the work of forgiveness by recognizing that we are the observer of this voice and not the voice itself. We are not the ego but have always been the holy Son of God.

How willing are we to let go of the pain of the past? This is all we need to do. No, it is not necessarily an easy process for us, but the opportunities that show up in the people and situations in our lives are perfect for this process of undoing all of the interference to the truth of who we are. Through this process of forgiveness, we learn our own true innocence. When we project our guilt, we are trying to achieve innocence by seeing the guilt in our brothers. We want them to be punished for their sins and see them as the bad guys while seeing ourselves, by comparison, as superior. As long as we keep projecting our guilt 'out there,' we will simply be perpetuating the illusion.

When we learn that it is only ourselves we are hurting by attacking our brothers, then we become more willing to give up our attacks. We cannot be innocent while seeing another guilty. When we see our brother's true innocence, we will know it is in us as well. This is the law of perception as described in Chapter 25, "You see what you believe is there, and you believe it is there because you want it there." (T.25.III.1.3)(ACIM OE T.25.IV.23) Now the question is, "How much do we want to see our brother's innocence so we can know our own?" Or would we rather hold onto our stories and our grievances?
 
A few years ago I was at a Psychology of Vision workshop where we picked people in our group who reminded us of people in our families, an aunt, sister, cousin, parent etc. Then we looked at what we were projecting on these people. It was a valuable process in helping me to appreciate how much 'shadow figures' from the past are projected onto people currently in my life. With each 'shadow figure', I had an association, which was either of special love or special hate. The extent of the feelings aroused was the extent of the grievances from the past that I was still holding onto. These are all unresolved emotions that are triggered by people in our lives currently. I noticed that my strongest reactions were to the person I picked as my father figure in the workshop. Through this exercise, I realized how much was still unresolved in my feelings toward him. The person who was a shadow figure for my father was a perfect mirror for me to see my unresolved judgments from the past. It was a powerful opportunity to be released from the chains that kept me imprisoned in these past associations where I was still holding my father responsible for my unhappiness.

To forgive is to give up the wish that the past could be different. We forgive our brother's past so we can forgive our own. "The past is the ego's chief learning device, for it is in the past that you learned to define your own needs and acquired methods for meeting them on your own terms." (T.15.V.2.1)(ACIM OE T.15.VI.46) Thus, our strategies were developed for having our needs met by using everyone to support our specialness. Fortunately, we can undo any of these past associations and decisions that we have made based on faulty perceptions. They are all faulty! Thus it is never too late to have a happy childhood! We can release painful past memories through forgiveness any time we choose. This lesson clearly states that if I am seeing the past, I am seeing what is not there and, in fact, never was. All that there is about the past is only in my own thoughts based on faulty perceptions. I can elect to change those thoughts with the help of the Holy Spirit.
 
I recently received an email from a Course student that shows us what the forgiveness process can deliver. It goes as follows: "I don't know what happened last night for me but as I drove away from your home I suddenly began to feel and experience all the love that my family had given me over my life. It was so overpowering that I wept deeply while I drove. I realized that I had been looking all my life at the ego side of everyone and had not recognized the love that flowed freely from them. I find myself seeing the love in everyone I see and meet today instead of projecting all my judgments on them. I feel no stress just total acceptance of everyone by seeing their love rather than my anger. These words do not do justice to describing the experience I am having but I did want to share this with you. My only hope is to remain in this transformed state of love and peace."

Chances are that we won't remain in this transformed state of peace and love, but that does not matter as long as we stay committed to do the forgiveness work so that we know how to return to this state and remember, "In every difficulty, all distress, and each perplexity Christ calls to you and gently says, "'My brother, choose again.'" (T.31. VIII.3.2)(ACIM OE T.31.VIII.87) And we keep making this choice until there is only one Voice that we listen to and there is no more to choose between. As the song says, "even if you broke your vow a thousand times, all are welcome here."
 
The truth is that it is only our thoughts that can hurt us---nothing else. As Jesus says, over and over, in the Course, nothing is outside of us. "He does not realize that he makes this world, for there is no world outside of him." (T.12.III.6.7)(ACIM OE T.11.IV.29) "If only the loving thoughts of God's Son are the world's reality, the real world must be in his mind."(T.12.III.7.1)(ACIM OE T.11.IV.30) "That is why you must realize that your hatred is in your mind and not outside it before you can get rid of it; and why you must get rid of it before you can perceive the world as it really is."(T.12.III.7.10)(ACIM OE T.11.IV.31) Yes, we are only hurt by our own thoughts. "You have chosen a sleep in which you have had bad dreams, but the sleep is not real and God calls you to awake." (T.6.IV.6.3)(ACIM OE T.6.V.50) We must not believe our own thoughts. Suffering comes from believing in what we are thinking.
  
Today, let us "determine to be not as we were. Let us use no relationship to hold us to the past, but with each one each day be born again." (T.13.X.5)(ACIM OE.T.13.IV.24) I love that. In each brother or sister we encounter today, instead of seeing in them our past associations, we can take responsibility for our projections, turn them over to the Holy Spirit and choose again. It is our determination not to use our brothers and sisters to keep us from the love that we are, and in that we are born again. In that, we affirm that the past is over. It can touch me not.

VII. The Purpose of Pain             

54 Pain demonstrates the body must be real. It is a loud, obscuring voice whose shrieks would silence what the Holy Spirit says and keep His words from your awareness. Pain compels attention, drawing it away from Him and focusing upon itself. Its purpose is the same as pleasure, for they both are means to make the body real. What shares a common purpose is the same. This is the law of purpose, which unites all those who share in it within itself. Pleasure and pain are equally unreal, because their purpose cannot be achieved. Thus are they means for nothing, for they have a goal without a meaning. And they share the lack of meaning which their purpose has.

 

55 Sin shifts from pain to pleasure and again to pain. For either witness is the same and carries but one message: "You are here within this body, and you can be hurt. You can have pleasure, too, but only at the cost of pain." These witnesses are joined by many more. Each one seems different because it has a different name, and so it seems to answer to a different sound. Except for this, the witnesses of sin are all alike. Call pleasure pain, and it will hurt. Call pain a pleasure, and the pain behind the pleasure will be felt no more. Sin's witnesses but shift from name to name, as one steps forward and another back. Yet which is foremost makes no difference. Sin's witnesses hear but the call of death.

 

56 This body, purposeless within itself, holds all your memories and all your hopes. You use its eyes to see, its ears to hear, and let it tell you what it is it feels. It does not know. It tells you but the names you gave it to use when you call forth the witnesses to its reality. You cannot choose among them which are real, for any one you choose is like the rest. This name or that, but nothing more, you choose. You do not make a witness true because you called him by truth's name. The truth is found in him if it is truth he represents. And otherwise he lies, if you should call him by the holy Name of God Himself.

 

57 God's Witness sees no witnesses against the body. Neither does He harken to the witnesses by other names which speak in other ways for its reality. He knows it is not real. For nothing could contain what you believe it holds within. Nor could it tell a part of God Himself what it should feel and what its function is. Yet must He love whatever you hold dear. And for each witness to the body's death He sends a witness to your life in Him Who knows no death. Each miracle He brings is witness that the body is not real. Its pains and pleasures does He heal alike, for all sin's witnesses do His replace.

 

58 The miracle makes no distinctions in the names by which sin's witnesses are called. It merely proves that what they represent has no effects. And this it proves because its own effects have come to take their place. It matters not the name by which you called your suffering. It is no longer there. The One Who brings the miracle perceived them all as one and called by name of fear. As fear is witness unto death, so is the miracle the witness unto life. It is a witness no one can deny, for it is the effects of life it brings. The dying live, the dead arise, and pain has vanished. Yet a miracle speaks not but for itself, but what it represents.

 

59 Love, too, has symbols in a world of sin. The miracle forgives because it stands for what is past forgiveness and is true. How foolish and insane it is to think a miracle is bound by laws which it came solely to undo! The laws of sin have different witnesses with different strengths. And they attest to different sufferings. Yet to the One Who sends forth miracles to bless the world, a tiny stab of pain, a little worldly pleasure, and the throes of death itself are but a single sound-a call for healing and a plaintive cry for help within a world of misery. It is their sameness that the miracle attests. It is their sameness that it proves.

 

60 The laws which call them different are dissolved and shown as powerless. The purpose of a miracle is to accomplish this. And God Himself has guaranteed the strength of miracles for what they witness to. Be witnesses unto the miracle and not the laws of sin. There is no need to suffer any more. But there is need that you be healed because the suffering of the world has made it deaf to its salvation and deliverance.

 

61 The resurrection of the world awaits your healing and your happiness that you may demonstrate the healing of the world. The holy instant will replace all sin if you but carry its effects with you. And no one will elect to suffer more. What better function could you serve than this? Be healed that you may heal, and suffer not the laws of sin to be applied to you.
