Summer Reading, Book Spotlight, Recess  /  May 2016

A Summer of Fun
and Learning
It is well known that children tend to lose reading skills over the summer. Numerous researchers have written about "summer reading loss", or more generally, "learning loss". In a PBS Parents article on this topic, literacy expert Julie Wood shares many helpful tips, including this one:

Read aloud to your child, even if he can read on his own. It helps build vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.
Whether you are passing time on an airplane or train, lingering a bit more than usual with a bedtime story, or  relaxing under a shady tree,  we hope reading can be a memorable part of your summer!

Book Spotlight: Summer Reading
Ages 2-4: A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee

A relaxing camping trip turns into high adventure as Mr. Magee and his dog Dee negotiate some unexpected rapids. Chris Van Dusen, author of Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee, infuses this lively read-aloud with some exceptionally funny and engaging artwork.
Ages 5-7: Tales from the Waterhole

Author/illustrator Bob Graham has created an extraordinary miniature anthology, with a cast of animals from the African savannah frolicking and hanging out around the waterhole like neighborhood kids. Organized in five short stories, this versatile book can be a read-aloud for younger children and an introduction to the chapter book format that older children can read and enjoy on their own.
